Show SMOOT'S GROSS DISCOURTESY. The two du3's' convention of Governors Gover-nors in Salt, Lako City was nmrked by nothing unpleasant save only by the boorishncss of Apostle Smoot. lie appeared ap-peared as the champion of the renc-tionao- Pinchot policies so far as he could; tho policies that tend toward retardntiou and hindrance of the development de-velopment of all this western country; but he, was pretty well used up in his encounters with the Governors when ho camo in' contact with thorn. Still, his shocking- bad manners and gross discourtesy were a cause of shame to the people of Utah. Governor Brady of Idaho took occasion oc-casion to criticise the workings of tho forestry service wherein those workings are detrimental to the settlers and to the public interests contiguous. Apos-tlo Apos-tlo Smoot, in effect, dared the Governors Gover-nors to produce any case of abuse- or mismanagement. Governor Brady promptly named thocaso where a settler set-tler had applied for permission to cut wood for his winder's use, and the re-pb' re-pb' to his application was not received until the succeeding. March, when the winter had passed bv'. Smoot prompt!' said that this could not possibly be true, in effect calling Governor Brad' a liar. "The Tdaho Governor followed that with another caso where the Pacific, Pa-cific, Idaho & Northern had to send four hundred miles to got telegraph poles for its line of wires, while ;oIe timber was growing in abundance just beside its line of road. Here, again, Smoot said that this was highly improbable, giving Brady tho lie again. Persisting in his citation of instances, Governor Brad- told of a homesteader who was denied his full acreage and was limited to but nineteen or twenty acres, although tho family had lived on tho site two 3'ears and had built r, comfortable com-fortable and substantial home. Again Smoot said "this could not possibl' be so," giving Brad- the lie for the third time. We do not know how to account for this grossly discourteous attitude of Smoot toward Brad', who was a guest here on invitation, unless it is that the Mormon church has decided to desert Brady in his campaign for reelection re-election this year in Idaho. The primaries pri-maries this month will show, however, whether this is true or not; but whether or not this supposed desertion may be tho cause for the repeated insults in-sults that Smoot put upon Brad', there can be no question about the ill breeding breed-ing shown and tho shame of treating a guest in that manner. Governor Brady undoubtedly gave instances that were within his knowledge; and his word should have been accepted as true. , Following tho instances given by'Gov-ernor by'Gov-ernor Brady, a few wero added by Governor Brooks of Wyoming, one being be-ing a case where a forest supervisor in Jackson's Hole is grazing a thousand thou-sand head of his own cattle on a forest for-est reserve. Smoot apparently did not dare to give the lie to Governor Brooks, but admitted that the caso was possible pos-sible and offered if Brooks would give the names and details of tho case that he would report that supervisor, provided pro-vided it were shown that the supervisor takes advantage of the situation. Governor Gov-ernor Brooks said that was just the point. Of course, the supervisor took advantage of it, being but human. He would not bo a natural or normal man if he did not. Smoot doos not seem to have had tho gall to interpose any further, and when Representative Kahu said that tho case cited by Governor Gov-ernor Brooks was analogous to that of a man approaching a member of Congress with an advantageous proposition proposi-tion to obtain his consent to desired legislation, Smoot appeared to hae .nothing to say. i A score or more of like instances were given by the Governors and representatives rep-resentatives of tho nine States represented, repre-sented, and Smoot was for once snuffod out in spite of his volubility. It is not to the credit of Utah to have such ill-bred and repeated iu-sults iu-sults delivered by a man so promU ncnt as Apostlo Smoot, to prominent officials who are invited to this city to confer upon public interests and to attend at-tend to the interests of tho settlers within their States. Tho Tribune regrets re-grets that this indefensiblo incident occurred, and congratulates tho Governors Gov-ernors on their good temper when responding re-sponding to Smoot whore an angry response re-sponse might easily have led to an altercation al-tercation that would havo discredited Smoot for all time. |
