Fifty railroad cars were demolished or damaged, among them the private care of President Peters of the Long Island railroad, when an explosion ex-plosion occurred in the express shed, of the Long Island railroad in Long Island City tonight. . The fire which followed the explosion was fanned by the wind and for a time threatened the station and tho freight yards. Flftpcn mall, passenger and freight cars wero entirely consumed. A great amount of baggage was entirely destroyed. A number of railroad employees were painfully burned while engines wero pulling pull-ing other cars out of the fire zone. An official Investigation is under way. A dozen workmen, who were In tho sheds at tho time, had narrow escapes from serious injuries. |
