A most peculiar case of Its particular kind is Interesting tho medical profession here. A sen-ant named Josephine has fallon into a cataleptic catalep-tic slumber and cannot be awakened. She Is at present In the hospital at Alencon, where sho has been since January-Josephine, January-Josephine, who Is 32 years old, has for the last thirteen years been subject to nervous fits, which occurred every few hours. Sho was completely prostrated after theso attacks, and was incapable of working for several days. Her cure was extremely slow In the hospital. Her spirits were affected, and she became convinced that sho would never work again. A3 her character became more somber her nervousness Increased. On Juno 11 last, after n day in which sho exhibited unusual mental agitation, sho fell Into a sleep from which she has not yet recovered. Hearing, sight and taste arc suspended. Only the sense of smell remains In a certain measure. Tho eyelids frequently tremblo convulsively, whilo at intervals the patient gives utterance ut-terance to Inarticulate groans. Dr. Paul Fares, professor at the school of psychology, is extremely interested In this remarkable case, and Is using his best efforts to convert the pathological sleep Into a hypnotic sleep, In which state the patient would bo more accessible to suggestions of a therapeutic efficacy. His labors In that direction have been crowned wltli success When sho fell Into tho sleep Josophlno was completely speechless; today she articulates ar-ticulates in a loud voice, thc effect of suggestion. Responding to tho same Influence, In-fluence, sho sits up without assistance in bed. Under tho guidance of tho doctor doc-tor her faculties return little by little. But her muscles have lost their most elementary ele-mentary powors of movement. Her medical attondant la now working upon the "muscle memory." Ho believes that Eresontly the dreamer will bo called back y a scientific miracle from tho Limbo where her mind wanders, and she will bo restored to an active life. |
