Show HUG TIMBER I Nfi JMII I Bosses in Cache County Making H Effort to Secure Ayail- H able Candidates. . H COLLEGE QUESTION IS H THE PARAMOUNT ONE Upon This Everything in Cache H Hinges ; Difficulty Experi- H enced in Finding Men. H Spocial to Tho Tribune. LOGAN, July 28. Not a little activ-ity activ-ity in political matters is noticeable here. Tho old party bosses are busy canvassing the situation, making plans, and looking up available candidates, with tho result that thero aro plenty who aro willing to serve. Tho impor-tant impor-tant consideration this year seems to bo to find men endowed with capacity and forco for legislativo timber, bocause it is recognized that tho college question will bo paramount next winter in the State Legislature. Throo names are being bandied among & Bepublicans for tho position of State Senator, John A. Hendrickson, H. Bui-len, Bui-len, Jr., and B. E. Bobcrts being thus honored. Eobert3 has served two terms in tho lower House, and hi3 friends think it but fitting that ho should be advanced to tho' Senate. Hendrickson and Bullen each have many f riends, and both aro alleged to be making an active canvass for the nomination. IH Bullen Objects. There aro those hero who propose that Bullen demit his ambition for the Sen-ato, Sen-ato, and consent to be a candidate for tho House, where it is predicted tho col-lege col-lege light will be hot. The reason given lor this is that Bullen is well primed with facts on the collego ques-tion, ques-tion, having been a member of the Gut-ler Gut-ler commission, and being one of the two who wrote and signed tlie majority report. But Bullen does not take kindly to this disposition of his case. In tho meantime, it is alleged that could Bui-len Bui-len be scheduled for the House, things would bo simplified for Hendrickson, JM making his nomination for tho Senato, if not feasible, at least possible. Hen-drickson, Hen-drickson, it is alleged, has for months past been industriously promoting his , own candidacy, using all available in-fluenco in-fluenco in that behalf, and, it ia oon-ceded, oon-ceded, has a strong force behind him. jH Democrats in Quandary. The Democrats are in a quandray as to what will bo tho part of wiadom for them this yoar. They havo a consum-ing consum-ing desire to win, and. a general feeling is prevalont that their chances are more propitious now than at any timo in re-cent re-cent years. Two things they seem bent on: ''By every moans possible to avoid giving offense, and to pleaso all who jH aro likely to be influential in promoting JM their cause, So far a3 can be ascertained, the eyo of Democracy would seem, to havo a backward look in tho quest for avail-ablo avail-ablo Legislative material. As the lifo of tho collego is considered of first im-nortance, im-nortance, and as it is believed the fight for consolidation will be a -desperate IH one, real fighters among the Democrats one" at a premium. The party has a number of such men who have doue valiant service on the floor of the Leg-islaturo Leg-islaturo in tho past; and while some of them have been retired from politics. IH their names now are receiving most IH honorable mention. Tho slogan now is IH "Men of aDproved experience," in oon-sequence oon-sequence of which tho names of Joseph Monsen, I. C. Torsen and George A. Barber are on manv lips, and with less frequoncy that of S. A. Lahgton. As to Fusion. There is also moro or loss discussion IH of tho wisdom of fusion this year. Somo advocate a coalition of the two politi-cnl politi-cnl parties, and the selcotion or the IH strongest men of both for Legislative IH timbur. This method would show the IH State that Cache is a unit for the col- IH lege, and will nocept no compromise. IH But among politicians this method has jH many opponuuts, it being clear that somo men who aro hungry for oftloo would have to stand aside. Among Democrats considerable hope is entertained that the party mar be IH suce3sful in tho State canvass, 16 is IH said that tho nomination for Congress will bo offered to Judgo Powers, in the IH belief that in another tuBsle, and under changed conditions, lie could defeat Mr. VM Howell. IH Noboker for Congress. Should Judgo Powers decline tho nom- jH ination, howovor, tho Cache Domocraoy JM proposes to offer a man for tho place, ' that Howell mav front a man ox his acquaintance. Tho gentleman in ques-tion ques-tion is nono other than Attorney Prank K. Noboker. Noboker is a young man of alFablo proclivities, a good lawyor, and a fluent talkor, possessing many telling campaign qualities, and, it is bo-lievcd) bo-lievcd) would giYO Howell a hard race. In conversation on this subject with a leading Republican here, Tho Trib-uno's Trib-uno's representative ventured to broach tho possible nomination of Nobekorfor Congress by tho Democracy, inquiring, IH "Do you not think our Prank, under jH the ciroumslanccs, would run Howell a close race?" The reply waa prompt aud docisivo, to tho effect that Noboker would stand no chance at all, and clos-in clos-in a with these words, "That matter is already fixed, and Mr. Howoll is going jH back to Congress." |
