Show BURGLAR FAILED Binds and Gags Boy, and Ransacks House at Eureka. JOHN MURPHY'S HOME SCENE OF OPERATIONS Large Sum Had Been in the House a Few Days Before. Spocial to Tho Tribune. EUREKA, July 2S. A burglar who has, up to this time, succeeded in making his get-away, entered the houso of John Murphy In the southern part of tho city last night. Mr. Murphy's young son was asleep In tho house at the time, and tho, entrance of tho man caused him to awaken. Before tho boy could, get up from tho couch upon which he was lying, tho burglar seized him and in a few minutes, in fact, before the boy could mako an outcry, he was bound hand and foot and a gag placed in his mouth. Eansacked the House. After the child had been disposed of In this manner tho burglar ransacked the houso In an effort to locate money which ho evidently boliovod to bo hidden there. Mr. Murphy did have a large sum of money hidden In tho house until a few days ago, when ho removed It, and the officers hero believe that in soma manner someone learnod that tho money was there. Had tho burglar entered the place a few days sooner ho would havo undoubtedly secured something for his trouble. Murphy Was Absent. Mr. Murphy Is working night shift at one of the mlhos, whilo his wife has been upon a visit to Butte. Mont. She returned upon tho lato train last night and upon going to fher homo found the boy bound nnd gagged nnd scarcoly a ploco of furniture In tho entire houso waB in Its accustomed place. After releasing tho boy cno notified Sheriff Whitehead, who has boen working upon the case eycr since. The ofllcor has a fairly good description of tho burglar from the boy, and may succeed In landing him. From all Indications tho trick was turned by "homo lalent." or by some one who was familiar with tho house, and Mr. Murphy's Mur-phy's habits of keoplng money thero. |
