BY winning the one-half mile relay; the last event on the enrd, thi ;' University of Utah track team : matched victory from tho dozen : husky youths who represented Colorado college In the interstate meet at Cum-' j' mlngsSs field yeaUrday afternoon. So '; evenly were the points divided that un til Capt. Val Rldeout of the "U" track' squad dashed against the tape, an easy winner In th relay, tho winner of the meet wrs in doubt. The nine points' captured In this event would have thrown the meet to Colorado had their runners been equal to the occasion, but as It wa3 the four Hpcedsttrs from thqj school on tho hill pocketed the credits In easy fashion and cinched the victory for Utah. , About COO persons, principally students, stu-dents, Journeyed to Cummlngs's Held tc see the sport. A general feeling seemed to prevail that the wearers of the MU" would win an easy victory and perhaps for this reason tho 'varsity rooters were unusually silent. Even whn thplr own" athletes won. tho delegation In the bleachers and grandstand failed to raise 11 cheer and throughout the afternoon thero was a marked absence of tho usual enthusiasm prevalent on an oc--caslon of this kind. ' From a spectator's standpoint, thq meet wns ono of the best that has ever bten pulled off In this city. Most of tho events wero hotly contested and tl(3 performances of all the athletes wcro cf the kind thnt cause tho blood to1 move faster, even In the most slugglBh veins. Four Records Broken. Four State records were broken atj lhr met yastordny Rfternoon and two" others equalled. "Hoddy" Whitney, the crack sprinter from the "U." made a spectacular run in the 2"0-yard dnahj covering the dlstanco In twenty-two; epconds Hat. This broke the State reo ord for the distance. Some Idea of Whitney's speed can be obtained when! It is considered that he wmt the dls tince at a rate of ten seconds for every, 100 yards, it was the prettiest race over teen on a local track and Whitney was forced to make record time to defeat Painter, the plucky sprinter from Colo-j raelo. Fred Bennlon, tho giant shot-putter and hammer-thrower of the "V." re-, deemed himself yesterday and captured first places In both events. Bennlon! more than made up for his miserable performance of the previous week bjj tossing the sixteen-pound hammer out u distance of 13-1 feet -74 inches, completely com-pletely shattering the State record. Bennlon's Great Work. Four times yesterday Bpnnlon hurled J the leaden missile and four times he threw It safely beyond the reach of any ) of his competitors. The llrst throw, was 129 feet 3 Inches. Noxt time the big fullback put It out 131 feet 4 Inches On his next trial ho did one Inch bettjfr, and on tho final throw covered 13-1 trfti. 1 Inches, broaklng the record by nej-; ly twenty feet. "Speedy JImmIe" Wade clipped a half second off his own State record for the half mile, covering the distance In Wade was not pushed hard until thoC last 220 yards or tha probabilities aro.K that he could have made still betters time. ft Painter and Bico Wero Stars. m To Painter and Rice of the Colorado college team belong great crvdlt lor th showing made by their school. The Mi former proved himself to be one of the Sj) fastest sprinters ever seen In this vl- clnlty and an all-round athlete of un- usual ability. Painter captured second f. in both of the iprlnts. second In the pole-vault, first in the high Jump and did his share in the half-mile relay. Rice, too, was a star and captured tl total of eighteen points for his tafrtJl The Colorado hurdler took both of "JdlK obstacle racea with little effort, wiia first in the broad Jump and second h'w the hljh Jump. He is a hurdler of ""ll sldecal ability, having covered the yards in 16 2-fi seconds. if Horace Whitney. Val Rldeout. WadsKl and Bennlon were the particular ttirau for the "L" Whitney captured bcHhRK sprints In beautiful style, and estftb- lished a new State record in ono of 'h. events. Rldeout won the -110 with ap parent eaae, while "Spfdy Jlrorrlo fW Wade simply toyed with his opponents: in the mile and galloped heme as hew ploased. Bennlon's work wl'h the hammer has already been mentioned. AK "Fuzzy" JTooro Had Bad Luck-B "Fuzzy" Moore, Whitney's speed JE team mate, met with some hard luckJJBI and failed to get a place In thew fc! 230 daoh. Moore beat the plstcl and' I stoppod when Starter Plummer called ; J to the men to come back. The re- j I malnder of the sprlntery kept going axd JJ ' Moore was left at the post. The popu-ffifl'i popu-ffifl'i 'iar runner gamely attempted to over-tji over-tji )aB the bunch, but their lead was too Aw IIrlt an ne 1:ad to be content with Wh place. ' ?Tho feature of the meet was the re- f!ay, upon which hinged victory and de-fut de-fut for the local school. The Colorado rannera had shown up so well that ta( there were a few who doubted that the jjpj jYarsity four could do the (.rick. :fi j How the- Relay Was Won. $y ?Dalo Pitt and Painter started the 3 is .rice. The two men ran abreast for '-"S tearly two hundred yards, but the "U" jff. runner gradually drew ahead and turned the race over to Moore with a Jf d of nearly ten feet. . "Fuzzy" wa9 anxious to show the t9 ;op.ch that he can travel some despite W ,the fact that he failed to place in the Jv! .')r'nu'' a cut loose at a hair-raising SJ dip. The Colorado runner was unable lO? ;to hold the pace, and Moore tagged 3' .Whitney at least five yards to the good. 5 ii Whitney had considerable ginger left (J,t ted opened up the gap still further, s? fWhen Capt. Rldeout took up the stretch M0t ran he was nearly ten yards to the m .tood. After a beautiful run the tall etJJ ijprlnter Phot past the finish nearly 3i ijflten yards ahead of the Colorado fiian, who had vainly attempted to cut jrfl town the lead.
