Show TRADE, BUSINESS, AND FINANCE. The past week has been cool and Htormy, retarding growth, and adding materially to the water supply. The streams are running bank full, and the lake surely ought to rlee, with Mich large additions of water. The cool spell will probably do no lasting harm, and the valley and desert ranges will be much helped. I The wool activity is on the wane, the stress of the season being past. Very largo tonnages of wool have been shipped from the various clipping stations, sta-tions, and the bulk of the clip Ih safely on Its way eastward. The total clip in the region of which this city Is the actual ac-tual and financial center is something near thirty million pounds, and tho money paid for it will be well ovt-r throe million dollars when all the payments pay-ments have been completed. The mines of the State keep on with thoir great production, w"hlch constantly constant-ly rises above 5500,000 a week, counting the dally sales of ore nnd bullion bul-lion and the output of the Independent smolters. The smelting plants of this valley are In full blat, and are pressed to their capacity to treat the great amounts of ore precipitated upon them. But they arc fully equal to the demand, and constantly add to and improve im-prove their plants as the nood calls for. A feature of the time is the contest to get the Tonopah ores, which naturally natu-rally belong here, and can here be treated to the utmost advantage. Tho railroad building in to tho Tonopnh camp from the west, to connect with .the Carson & Colorado, ought to, and no doubt will, facilitate tho transportation of those ores to this valley for treatment. treat-ment. There is nothing to say of the San Pedro road (the Salt Lake route) beyond be-yond what has been said heretofore. Energetic progress is being madct the heavy cut this side of Moapa Is approaching ap-proaching completion, and now the objective ob-jective point of the contracts Is Las Vegas ranch, which will be reached probably the ensuing month. Renewed assurances are given that tho road will be completed and trains running through to Los Angeles even prior to the time which Mr. Clark set, and that early next year the connection will be made. The week has seen a now move by the Western Pacific; its route through the Sierras is thrown fifty miles north cf Beckwlth Pase, heretofore laid down as its point of penetration, to Fre-donla Fre-donla Pass, which offers a better and cheaper route. At the gamo time, should the 11II1 system of roads from the north wish a connection with San Francisco that would be a more direct line on which to mako the point. At the same time. It will not be particularly out of Its way in the line to this city. The Denver &. Northwestern (the Moffat Mof-fat road), building from Denver to this city, continues Its active work, and makes cheerful reports from time to time of the work done and that In immediate im-mediate prospect. Throughout the State the year's prospects pros-pects arc excellent. Never has the water been more abundant for Irrigation; the crops arc in a satisfactory condition, despite the cool weather of tho past week: the late rains havo helped the ranges wonderfully and the Immediate money realized from the mining output makes cash easy and business strong. In this city, the abundance of money has made collections good, and bank clearances tho past week for one of the few times in seven or eight months', were on the increase side; not large, to be sure, only six-tenths of one per cent, but a gain at all, In view of so many losses, is something to achieve. Trnde Is good, and the railroad situation is greatly encouraging, not only with respect re-spect to the new roads expected, but In regard to the treatment of the city In the matter of freights, a question on which a favorable adjustment is hoped. The very active building operations of the city continue to be the prominent feature of the year. It looks as if moro money would be spent in building operations oper-ations this year than ever before in any one year. Tho completion of the Atlas block, the big Lafayette school, the Home Telephone business block for headquarters, the Y. M. C. A. structure, the Heath block, the Holmes terrace, and other noteworthy Htructurcs with the hundreds of dwellings going up In all parts of the city, are sure to mark this as a year long to be remembered in the building line. ' The progress making In the Government Govern-ment reclamation work under the National Na-tional Irigatlon law, is necesenrily glow, but It is sure. The detail of the agreements, agree-ments, the pledge to be made to the Government for the repayment of the money rpent, in ten annual installments, install-ments, without interest, the petition from the land-owners and water-users to tho Department to proceed with the work, and the drawing up of the final pnpera, all require time; but it is satisfactory satis-factory to know that there la no obstruction; ob-struction; the persons in interest are all agreed, wive one, and are helping on the matter to the utmost of their ability. The general scheme embracing all the waters of the northern part of the State received a decided boost in the unanimous and enthusiastic approval ap-proval at the American Fork meeting on Wednesday evening. Throughout the country, improvement improve-ment In trade is generally reported, with increased distribution movement But this doe not apply to the iron trade, which with occasional helpful activities Is dull and on the decline; the tie-up on the Lakea Is having a detrimental detri-mental effect upon the trade. Railroad earnings are slightly bkw those of last year, but above those of any fermor year. Copper is lower and wool In dull. Bualness failures for the week are about average. The bunk clearance of the week show a decrease of 1S.3 per cent in New York compared with those of tha corresponding corre-sponding week last year. The banks outside of New York show a. decrease of 7.S per cent. The total for all is 14.6 per cent decrease. The New York bank statement, lseued, yesterday, ahows heavy decrease In loan", large increase In surplus, in extra U. S. dcpoelts, and in specie, with smaller increase in legal tenders. The gold exports continue, but not on as large a. scalo as before; it Is probable that seventy-five millions will measure the extent of thorn, whereas "tho street" reckoned they might roach a hundred millions and was not dismayed. The stock market average extremely dull, and the speculative fever, which was at so high a stage a year ago, appears ap-pears to have entirely subsided. |
