Show Republicans Elect Three Davis Women By GARY R. BLODGETT OGDEN -- Three Davis Counly women were recently named officers of the Utah Federation of Republican Women at the group's biennial convention held at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. MARY ELLEN Smoot. of Farmington, was elected first vice president. She will assist Beth Lowe.' of Ogden. who was named the state's federation federa-tion GOP president. Also elected officers from Davis County were Nancy Groll. Centerville. treasurer: and Lois Pickett. Bountiful, auditor. Rl BY Price, of Layton. was honored for her work in the GOP Party. She served as vice chairperson of the county's Republican Central Committee. Com-mittee. The women's GOP group from the Centerville-Farmington Centerville-Farmington area was also cited with a national award for their, contributions and dedication to the federation during the past year. OUTGOING president Wanda Rhodes, of Logan, told the women that the federation stands for unity and that members mem-bers should be committed to "selling President Reagan's program to every neighbor and friend." Representative James V. Hansen (R-Utah) was the keynote speaker. He spoke out against "drunk drivers" on U.S. Highways and said he has launched a campaign to be coordinated at federal, state and local levels of government to curtail the number of inebriated inebri-ated drivers on our highways. REP. HANSEN said he talks "a little bit from experience" because he has been involved in two accidents within the last six months where the driver of the other vehicle had reportedly reported-ly been drinking. His first accident occurred near his Washington D.C. office and resulted in the Congressman Con-gressman being pinned in the auto for several minutes. Rep. Hansen, however, was not seriously se-riously hurt. A FEW months later, his wife and two children suffered serious injuries in a two-car collision on Interstate Highway High-way 15 south of Bountiful. The Hansen family, with Rep. Hansen driving, were returning return-ing to their home in Farmington. Farm-ington. The Congressman from Utah's First District said he has asked Congress to "take immediate action to help stem the carnage and human suffer-ing suffer-ing caused by drinking drivers." HE NOTED that nationwide during the past decade more than 250,000 Americans have lost their lives in alcohol-related alcohol-related traffic accidents. Meanwhile he added, drinking drink-ing drivers cost the U.S. economy eco-nomy an estimated $5 billion annually. Citing what he termed "alarming statistics," Congressman Hansen said 70 Americans are killed daily -one every 21 minutes--due to alcohol-related vehicle accidents. |
