Show Vikings Btm Ahe With East Win THE LEOPARDS got serious se-rious about the whole thing with a halfback pass that completely com-pletely fooled the Vikes and handed East a 58 yard touchdown. touch-down. East then ran the option to perfection and the score read 16-8 for the Vikings. The Leopards put a final scare into the Vikes by scoring with ten seconds left on an option op-tion play. That play was set up by another long halfback pass. However, on the two point effort, junior Mark Law made a great hit to stop the runner and preserve the win. VIEWMONT HAD things their way in the first half piling up 210 yards of total offense but in the second half the Vikes could only muster 41 yards. Two reasons might have been the reason for this turnaround. First, the Vikes seemed to have a let in confidence when Caputo went out, and secondly, second-ly, the East defense should get a lot of credit for their play. All year, coaches have said the Leopards are as good as any team in the region on defense and the Viking fans got a first hand look at that in the second half. CAPUTO GOING down definitely de-finitely hurts the Vikings, but Rob Moon has had an excellent excel-lent junior varsity year and is capable of playing the tail back position. Indeed the Vikes are fortunate to have a player of his caliber to step in. t, f. m-H' . m-' i ;tfk ' r Xo)&3v;fv . . i , r , ' ' . - - vt ? . -- i r . - f v : '- , K :'' - ; : V J' 4 m - :1 I " 'ft ',' " K Z t"-" --., ' j - '"'J By DAVE WIGHAM SALT LAKE CITY Before Be-fore the season began View-mont View-mont players and coaches set two goals for themselves this season. Number one was finish fin-ish with a winning record on the season, at least 5-4. Then number two return to the state playoffs. THEY ACHIEVED the first goal last week with a thrilling 1 6-1 4 win over a very stubborn East team. Then the Vikings were 53 seconds away from achieving their second goal outright, they still have a shot at the state tournament. Had Bountiful won the Vikes were in the playoffs and many of them sat in the stands at Davis and witnessed that last minute touchdown of the Darts. Now the Vikings were to meet Highland on Tuesday at Woods Cross for the third place spot. Viewmont beat the Rams in regular season play and many feel they should qualify for state on that accomplishment accom-plishment but prior to the season sea-son the coaches voted for the playoff no matter what they did in league play. FIRST YEAR man, Mark Pierce, was hoping East would be down in this final battle and for the first half it appeared they were. "They had no shot at the playoffs so we were hoping hop-ing they would be thinking what's the use and simply go through the motions." Viewmont got on the board in the first period when Steve Caputo and Scott Hubbard alternated running the ball to set the Vikes up on the East 26 yard line. The coaches then made a great call in sending in the reverse of flanker Jeff Porter. Por-ter. It completely fooled the Leopards with the exception of the halfback who guard Jerry Jer-ry Miller destroyed with a great block. Given this block, Porter turned on the jets and went the distance. Joey Smith added the point after the Vikes led 7-0. THE VIKING defense gave up some yardage to the Leopards but soon got mean and forced East to punt. The Vikings took over on their own 22 yard line. Again the coaches sent in the perfect call that saw Roger Davis loft a perfect pass into the arms of a streaking Jeff Porter who didn't stop running until 78 yards later. Jeff caught the ball around mid-field and simply outran everyone. This time Smith missed the kick but the Vikes still led 13-0 and seemed to be coasting. Whatever the East coaches said in the lockers should go down in history books as a different dif-ferent Leopard team came out for the second half. Things got bad for the Vikes on the second play from scrimmage when Caputo was nailed and forced to leave the game. VIEWMONT MISSED another scoring opportunity in the third period. Rob Moon had just returned a punt 37 yards to the East 49 yard line and after a couple of running plays, Kurt Mathews lined up for a long field goal attempt. East broke through and blocked block-ed the attempt. East went to work but senior Ted Jones intercepted a pass and soon the Vikes were at the East 1 1 yard line. They couldn't get in the end zone though and Joey Smith kicked a 27 yard field goal to make it 16-0. Vicwmont's defense rose to the x casion last week and stopped a two point conversion effort by F.ast with ten seconds left in the game. Troy Larsen (33),. Martin Telaroli (53) ard Tad Lindsay (42) all converge on the runners. |
