320 Cubs attend annual tri-stake Day Camp The Vernal Junior High school lawn and park surrounding the community swimming pool was teeming with 320 Cub Scouts Friday as theyengaged in activity to earn badges, and in general have a good time. The event was the annual Cub Scout Day Camp. The opening ceremony was under the direction of Naples Ward. Three scouts performed the flag ceremony. Invocation In-vocation was by George Turner. Most of the packs present competed with their pack yell. The boys dipped sleeves as they panned for gold under the watchful eye of Nila Richards. The cubs got to keep the largest nugget they found as they dipped and sluched the sand and water in the pans. The wild west B-B gun shoot under the direction of Dan Glahn, Tom Williams and Rae Persons was a popular spot as the cubs learned gun safety and had a turn at hitting the bulls eye target. Crafts where the cubs created "pebble pals" out of native rocks was under the direction of Sharon Evertsen, Maureen Spencer, Dena Millecam, Anita Nokes, Derek Evertsen and Terry Harwood. The boys gathered in the shade on the North side of the Vernal Junior High School to glue together their creations. The rope swing and rope bridge was a popular spot to be for thrills and chills. If the cub made it across the eight foot high rope bridge he then clung onto a rope and swung to the ground. This event was under the direction of Norman Nickelson and Craig Blunt. Water relays, Indian headbands, campfire displays made up the Lewis and Clark area. Russel Smith, Cherryl Cristofferson and Phyllis Harward taught the cubs about these two famous explorers during their activities. "Tonto's Hunting Ground" was complete with bow & arrows and cubs ,in abundance. Arrows flying through ,.the . air caused directors George Hodgkinson, Craig Abbott and Paul ; Sabey, Council Executive to sometimes think about finding cover. No casualties were reported. The Old Watering Hole was a refreshing place after competing in the hot sun. The cubs splashed and cooled off under the watchful eye of John Smith and several pool lifeguards. The closing ceremony with District Vice President John Smith offering benediction was at 2 p.m. when the 320 cubs and 60 leaders called it an action packed day and went home. The Cub Scout Day Camp was under the direction of Phyllis Harward, Craig Blung, Sharon Evertsen, Nila Richards and Anita Nokes. A round table will be held July 19 at the Ashley Stake center starting at 7:30 p.m. A training course will be held for Webelos leaders, cub Masters and assistants July 19 at the same place and time.
