Show County, City in fop sin stcite volume f receipts The 1977 census of service industries in Utah ranked Uintah County fifth and Vernal City 6th largest counties and cities ranked by volume of receipts in 1977. The census showed that Utah's 11,391 - establishments in the "selected" service ser-vice industries had receipts totaling $838.2 million, an increase of 90.2 percent per-cent over receipts reported in 1972, according ac-cording to the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Uiniah County was listed with $29,171,000 and Vernal City $22,748,000 in receipts. The four counties higher than Uintah in order of size are Salt Lake, Weber, Utah and Davis. The cities with larger receipts than Vernal City, in order of size, are Salt Lake City, Odgen, South Salt Lake, Provo, and Murray according to the census. In the census of retail sales for 1977 Uintah County and Vernal City both rank 10th spot in the State. The top nine counties according to volume of sales in decreasing order are, Salt Lake, Utah, Weber, Davis, Cache, Box Elder, Washington, Iron, and Carbon. Cities in relation to volume of sales, with the largest first, are Salt Lake, Ogden, Murray, Provo, Orem, Logan, Bountiful, Boun-tiful, South Salt Lake, Cedar City and Vernal. Data from the 1977 census of retail trade show that Utah's 9,920 retail stores had sales totaling $4.1 billion, an increase of 75.9 percent over sales reported in 1972 when the last such census cen-sus was taken. Measured in dollar volume of sales, grocery stores were the largest retailers in the State with 1977 sales of $774 million, followed by new car dealers with $745 million, and department depart-ment stores with $454 million. These three kinds of businesses accounted for 47.6 percent of the State's total sales by ; retailers. j The 1977 payroll of retail stores in the State amounted to $467 million, up 73.1 percent from 1972. Hardware stores j showed the largest increase in payroll, i with an increase of 204.8 percent. There were 81,430 paid employees (full and part-time) engaged in retail ' trade in the State as of mid-March 1977. ; Eating places were the largest employers with 24,427 employees, ; followed by grocery stores with 10,329 employees, and department stores with ; 9,031 employees.
