' Many famous Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association cowboys such as Tom Ferguson, the all-around national champ for five years in a row from Miami, Oklahoma; Joe Marvel, Battle Mountain, Nevada, 1978 national bareback bronc riding champion; Joe Alexander, Marysvale, California; a bareback champ; Dave Brock, Pueblo, Colorado, 1978 calf roping champ; Brad Smith, team roping champ from Arizona; Don Gay, Mesquite, Texas; bull riding champ and Roy Cooper, Durrant, Oklahoma; calf roping champ, have competed in the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, but a number of them have taken a back seat to the Uintah Basin and Utah cowboys in the rodeo in Vernal. The Uintah Basin s Joe Frost was tne top rider in the saddle bronc event in 1972 and he also nabbed fourth place in the bareback riding event. Ogden's Lonnie Hadley placed first in the calf roping and Mac Jesson, Altamont, netted net-ted second place. Monte Hadley of Ogden captured first place in the average in the steer wrestling wrestl-ing in 1972 and Dick Moore, Vernal, placed fourth. Vernal's Rhett Searle pocketed first place in the second go in the steer wrestling. Altamont's Mac Jesson and Miles Shiner placed first in the team roping average. Clyde Ashby and Rhett Searle placed first in the second se-cond go and Buzz Holmes and Don Holmes, Vernal, placed second. Gary Warren and Bud Tomlinson, Vernal, placed first in the first go and Wayne Gardiner and Bryce Barker, Vernal, nabbed second in the first go of the team roping. Bobette Warren placed first in the barrel race average. Uintah Basin and other Utah cowboys 1 Unn-t- !n Ika 1074 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. The Uintah Basin's Charles Jenkins and Bryce Moore captured first place in the team roping and Vernal's Bobette Warren captured the barrel racing crown. Lonnie Lon-nie Hadley, Ogden, pocketed the calf roping title. Uintah Basin cowboys gave the PRCA cowboys a real good battle in the 1976 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. La-point's La-point's Sherwood Cuch beat out every PRCA cowboy, but one in the bareback bronc riding event. He placed second with a score of 69 on T17 Gutherie Dunn. Vernal's D. J. Terry finished in a tie for third place in the saddle bronc event , with a ride of 67 on Brute. Calvin Palmer, South Jordan and Kelly Wahlen, Clearfield, tied for third place in the bareback bronc riding contest. Jensen's Rex and Erv Wilkins placed second at 9.8 in the 1976 calf roping contest con-test and Dick Moore, Vernal, pocketed fourth in the steer wrestling at 7.4. Cindy Cin-dy Williams (Young) placed second in the barrel racing and Lori McNeill placed fourth. Jack Hannum, Odgen, who was a football coach at Union High School in Roosevelt for a number of years, won the steer wrestling title at 5.3. The big shocker in the 1977 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo was the performance by Utah cowboys in the calf roping event. Roy Cooper, Oklahoma, a national na-tional champ and Tom Ferguson, national na-tional all-around crown winner, competed com-peted in the event, but two Utah cowboys placed higher than Ferguson . and Cooper. Monte Hadley, Ogden, placed first at 8.8 and Jim Allen, Vernal, Ver-nal, nabbed second at 9.1. Tom Ferguson finished in a tie for third place at 9.3 and Cooper did not place. Vernal's cowboys Earl Reary and Don DeMille captured fourth place in the team roping in 1977 at 12.0. West Point's Corey Venstra placed first in the bareback bronc riding contest with a ride of 74. The money won. by cowboys has increased in-creased in the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. Vernal's Hal Mecham nabbed first place in the 1973 calf roping event and he collected $350.84. Four years later in the 1977 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo Monte Hadley placed first in calf roping and he won $546.84. The 1977 calf roping figure was almost $200 more than the 1973 prize. The Uintah Basin completely dominated the team roping event in the 1975 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. Placing in the event were: Gary Warren-Charlie Warren-Charlie Welch, Vernal, first; Terry Dalhberg-Bob Kissling, Roosevelt, second; se-cond; Phil and Terry Brotherson, Roosevelt, third and Cory and Leland McNeill, Vernal, fourth. The most outstanding performance by Vernal cowgirls and cowboys in the 1978 Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo took place in the team roping event. Brenda ' Durfee and VerrDon Durfee, who are now living in Richfield, upset a number of PRCA cowboys by placing fourth in the team roping event with a time of 8.7. Many of the top ranked cowboys have performed well at the Dinosaur Roundup Roun-dup Rodeo, but Vernal, Roosevelt, Altamont, Alta-mont, Lapoint, Gusher, Ft. Duchesne and various other Utah cowboys have done a good job of roping, wrestling and riding in the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo. The PRCA cowboys from out of the state of Utah will once again battle the local cowboys in the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo, July 12, 13 and 14 at 7:30 p.m. Mayor Sam Snyder has declared July 9-14 as "Western Week" and employers are urged to have their employees dress up in western clothes. Packed crowds at the rodeo each night will help make the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo a successful event for 1979. Maeser 3rd will be in charge of the consessions. |
