Show COL HENRY ON THE DEEP CREEK COUNTRY state journal ogden utah col george A henry a veteran of the civil war and who commanded the fourth iowa under gen grenville M dodge is in the city and registered at the broom hotel the colonel has been in utah thirteen years and all the time in the deep creek country which is just now attracting so much attention among mining men he is one of the oldest prospectors in the district in an interview with a representative of the jou journal anal the colonel gave the following interesting andrel and reliable lable account of that section of utah deep creek is situated about miles from ogden in tooele thoele county and is ninety miles from a railroad deep creek takes in a radius of seventy miles and in this territory there are twenty one mining districts clifton district in which col henrys interests lie contains about miners and prospectors in the early days there used to be a smelter at clifton but it has not been in operation for many years there are many patented mines in the district not b eing being worked but waiting for the advent of the railroad the principal properties here are at gold hill and dutch mountain in close proximity to clifton cifton many shipments have been made from this district the gold hill mine alone having produced over in gold it belongs to the estate of the late col J F woodman and has been shut down for several years the queen of sheba situated in spring creek mining district with a five stamp mill has for a long time been producing from four to five thousand dollars a mouth month five additional stamps have re recently centy been added and the output will henceforth be doubled the J P gardner group in clifton district has made several shipments for the purpose of testing their ores with very satisfactory results fish springs district thirty five miles from clifton shipped silver and lead ores during all the hard times and has produced over colonel henry owns four different groups comprising thirty two full 1 claims he made all the locations in person and has been having assessment work done all these thirteen years they are called the copper key etta lorene black diamond and minnehaha groups the four metals is a title given them because the different properties carry copper gold silver and lead at present four men are engaged in doing the assessment ses work there is an abundance of timber and water all over the deep greek creek country and all that is needed and what has long been hoped and prayed for is transportation to make it one of the richest districts in the state of utah at present ingress and egress are had by stage and wagon for a distance of ninety miles the present outlook for the long wished for railroad is excellent surveys of the western pacific recently made come within seven miles of clifton and senator darks clarks san pedro los angeles and salt lake route contains in its articles of incorporation provisions for a branch line to the deep creek country so that in all probability if one of the roads builds to these promising fields the other will also colonel henry who has been visiting relatives in ogden will go from here to salt lake |
