Show the columbus Colv imbus consolidated of alta it is hardly more than eighteen months now since tony jacobson began operations at alta since he undertook the gigantic undertaking of placing old mines on a producing basis and of developing prospects into mammoth producers and yet during this brief period wonderful success has crowned his efforts and he was able several months asro to in from his associates that the enterprise was on a self sus and paying basis beginning with the brain claim as aa a nucleus for the property now owned by the columbus consolidated mining company mr jacobson has added to the holdings of the association until now it is in possession of seventeen claims all in a body this splendid piece of property adjoining the noted flag flagstaff aalf and emma mines both great prodoc the columbus con group with but a few men and with but limited facilities at his command before the property could be placed upon a producing basis a large amount of development and exploratory work must necessarily be accomplished accommodations for employees were a necessity and machinery had to be installed the main workings of the columbus are confined to the columbus and howland tunnes tunnels the former is now in a distance of 1800 feet 1300 of which has been driven under the direction of mr jacobson the objective point being the big contact vein between lime and quartzite which cuts through the group being an extension of the mammoth ore body A r 27 U N M 5 A 0 CON SHOWING BOARDING HOUSE AND CODI BUILDING ers era or of mineral wealth in the early history of alta the former being accredited with a production of eight million while the latter has the handsome sum of five million to its credit tho the brain mine alone from mere surface workings having a recorded production of something like 00 6 before passing into the hands of mr jacobson and before its absorption by the columbus don company mr jacobson began the development of and a small jigging plant had to be provided for and yet since octo october ber ath of the present year the company has shipped ore to the value of net and consignments consign ments of good ore to the extent of tons monthly are being made to the big plant of the amerlean american sm smelling smelting elting refining company in salt lake valley with which very advantageous advantage oils arrangements have been made for 0 ore re treatment and purchase 13 which produced its millions in adjoining properties in the driving of this long tunnel a fissure was encountered 1300 feet from its mouth and this fissure was followed on its strike a distance of feet to its con on luence with the gigantic contact vein already alluded to the fissure being ore bearing the entire feet an and d from which many shipments have been made to th the e american smelter this ore having been taken out in doing tunnel work work only leaving untouched in the workings high grade and milling ore to the value of th three ree million dollars which is ready tor for extraction either for the m market arket or the mill it was when the main contact vein was encountered however that a big and most gratifying surprise was in store for the company at this point the vein has been crosscut cross cut for a distance of bf forty feet with only one wall yet disclosed this immense body of mineral is nearly all pay snipping shipping ore while cutting through it there are strata of even higher grade ore from six to seven feet in width from which shipments are now being made which will average about 60 net to the ton A drift has been run on this splendid ore body for a distance of sixty feet and there is no sign of diminution in values or size with every indication present of continuity and permanency at the point of connection the vein was cut at a vertical depth of about feet from the stir surface face and as the vein has a dip of about 4 45 degress this will give the company more than feet of backs or ground from the tunnel level to the grass roots which if present size of vein and present values are maintained means that the wealth of a rothschild or of a vanderbilt is practically in sight in this portion of the mine alone it means a future production almost beyond calculation and a source of income which should mean immense wealth to the stockholders of the company the rowland howland tunnel 1700 feet west of columbus tunnel is now in a distance of feet the last feet of which has been driven in on a monster body of milling miling ore this vein is also about forty feet in width and its permanency canot banot be questioned at this stage of development the mineral is a first class milling proposition and in its development and exploration the body has been raised upon for a distance of sixty feet all in pay ore while a sunk has been sunk from the tunnel level to a depth of 85 feet where the zone is even stron stronger gerand and values better than is the case on the tunnel level for several months ore from the howland tunnel has been jigged at the little i plant at the mine mice and the concentrates show an average value of 40 a ton in silver and lead the mineral being a splendid concentrating cent rating proposition and easily handled at both the columbus and the highland tunnels machine drills are used the power being compressed air generated at the com banys plant however when the electric power plant is completed all machinery will be electrically operated the last consignment of ore from the columbus tunnel settled for a few days ago showed values of gold ounces silver per cent lead and 9 per cent in copper to the ton and this is about the average of the tons monthly now being sent down by the company and it is the intention to maintain this output during the winter as the road up the canyon can be kept open with but little difficulty the company has but recently completed a modern and comfortable boarding house at the mine with accommodations for sev enty five men and it now has a force of about fifty oren in its employ a few of which are at work on ore are the balance being engaged 11 inthe the performance of development work in addition 0 tp o the boarding house bouse as sho shown wn in the accompanying halftone half tone illustration the finishing touches are being put on a building feet on the ground floor which will be used as a compressor house machine shop and blacksmith shop and when completed the machinery equipment will be complete and up to date early darly last fall the company began the installation stal lation of an electric power plant in little cottonwood canyon four and a half miles below the mine the buildings for this plant pant are completed and ready tor for their machinery equipment and everything is in readiness for the installation of the plant as soon as the machinery arrives which will be early in january the expectation being that the plant will be ready to go into commission by february 1st ast the poles are all up between I 1 the power station and the mine antt and the wire is being strung this plant pant will generate about horse power oi of which will be utilized at the mine ton concentrating plant to be built at the mine in the spring it being the intention intention Intent ign to dispose of the remaining power to neighboring mining companies a number of which are doing extensive and systematic work in mine operation and development in the immediate vicinity of alta this power proposition will greatly simplify and cheapen mining and milling operations at the columbus con and nearby mines and will do away with the heavy expense of coal hauling another factor connected with the cheapening of mining expenses will be the reopening opening re and reconstruction of the old alta tramway in the spring the tram will be electrically operated and when it is open for traffic will transport the ores of the columbus con and other alta mines to the railroad at sandy at a minimum cost this tramway as stated in the last issue of the mining review will form the basis for an incorporated company composed principally of the heavy mine owners of the district including the columbus con and it will greatly assist in promoting the best interests and welfare of the camp the success that has attended the operations of the columbus consolidated is gratifying as well as almost phenomenal while it is an attestation of the ability and good judgment of its management the company is now on a paying and self sustaining basis and its monthly piling up good profits pro fits there being good reason to believe that early during the coming year the company will be able to begin the payment of regular monthly dividends the personnel of the columbus consolidated mining company embraces the names of some of our best known mining and business men and its directorate is composed of experienced and able men as fo follows lows tony jacobson Jacob sori sod president and general manager clarence mccornick vice president arthur E snow secretary and trea treasurer gurer lewis A A jeffs and B F the company is capitalized at a shares |
