Show Shirts captures 4th at NAIA Javelin thrower Robert Shirts put the icing in the Southern Utah State College track season by capturing fourth place in the NAIA national meet last week in Abilene, Texas. Shirts, a junior from Cedar City, threw the javelin 218 feet 11 inches at the meet hosted by Abilene Christian College. He was in third place going into the final throw. The toss earned four points for SUSC. Pole Vaulter Bruce Bryan also competed for the Thunderbirds but failed to place in the top six. "He cleared 15-8, and that height probably placed him about seventh or eighth best in the meet," Boyd Adams, SUSC coach explains. SUSC finished in a tie for 39th place among the over-150 over-150 schools entered in the national meet. Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Con-ference champion Adams State finished ninth with 20 points, and University df Southern Colorado scored 19 points to finish in tenth place. Along with SUSC, they were the only RMAC schools to score in the meet. . Mississippi Valley, led by sprinter Charles Pickins and middle distance runner Herman Sanders, won the championship with 66 points. Pickins and Sanders accounted ac-counted for 40Mi points between them. Finishing behind Mississippi Valley in the top five were host Abilene Christian (61), Texas Southern (60), Azusa Pacific (43), and Angelo State (41). |
