Show Cedar YCC Camp open June After a long winter's sleep under a deep blanket of snow, the Cedar YCC Camp is being readied to receive 27 young men and women for a summer of work and education. The camp is scheduled . to open Sunday, June 15 and close August 9. The United States Youth Conservation Corps Camp is sponsored by the Cedar City District, Bureau of Land Management. The YCC program which is administered ad-ministered by the Departments Depart-ments of Interior and Agriculture, was established by the Departments of In- terior and Agriculture, was established by the President and the Congress to provide gainful summer employment em-ployment for young men and women 15 through 18 years of age. The program is designed to fill the following basic needs: (1) accomplish needed conservation work on public lands; (2) provide gainful employment for youth 15 through 18 years of age from all social, economic, ethnic, and racial classifications; and (3) develop in the youth an understanding and appreciation ap-preciation of the nation's natural environment, resources and national heritage. The camp is located on the Paunsaugunt Plateau near the Bryce Canyon Airport and is composed of 27 enrollees (boys and girls) and a staff of nine adults. The 40 hour per week work schedule will include 10 hours of environmental awareness education which will tie in closely with the kind of work projects that are being done. To eliminate formal structured classroom instruction, the educational aspect of the program is conducted in the field in small discussion groups where ideas may be exchanged ex-changed freely. Work projects will include fence construction of both barbed wire and pole types, stream improvement work to improve fish habitat, fence maintenance and some recreation site maintenance. Much of the summer work will be in remote areas where the enrollees will live in tents. A vareity of off-duty activities ac-tivities have been planned which will include sports events, fishing, handicraft and a weekend trip to Grand Canyon. Because of the gas shortage, nearly all activities ac-tivities will be centered at the camp. Cecil Jorgensen of the Bureau of Land Management is YCC Project Manager and has seen some very worth-while and quality work done by these young men and women. All of the work performed is scheduled in the BLM's annual work plan. The camp staff is composed com-posed of Mary Ann Wilks, Camp Director, Peggy Hardwick, Work Director, Ellen Mary Henwood, Environmental En-vironmental Awareness Coordinator, Howard Thorley, James Walters and Cynthia Reed, Crew leaders, Robin Thorley and Cheryl Anderson, Assistant Crew Leaders, and Barbara Gindl, Camp Cook. All of the staff have had previous experience ex-perience working with youth groups or on YCC staffs. |
