Show Students Receive Awards at SUSC Ceremony commencement ceremonies. The SUSC senior will graduate with high honors earning a BS in accounting and business administration. He also received the Utah Association of CPA's Accounting Ac-counting Student Award at the Thunderbird Awards Assembly. Mb Lawrence B. Esplin 7 4 J IA.Au John Reese Jon E, Reese Awards for outstanding contribution for the 1979-80 school year at Southern Utah State College were awarded to communications majors Cara L. Thorup, Riverton, and Randy Daniels, Cedar City, at the Thunderbird Awards Assembly held last week." The conveted awards were presented during the annual assembly which is held each year to honor students who have achieved high academic standing or who have made significant contributions to the college in departmental or co-curricular co-curricular activities. Ms. Thorup is a sophomore communications-theater arts major. She was recently named best supporting actress for her role in SUSC's "As You Like It," and was elected junior class senator in spring elections, she wrote the theme song "Together We Can Fly" for SUSC's March of Dimes Marathon. Daniels is a junior at SUSC and is well-know for his ' daytime , announcements issuing from the top of the student center. He was named Mr. SUSC during homecoming this year and was reelected to a second term . as coordinator of dances, a position on the ASSUSC Executive Council. Several other students, organizations and college personnel were also honored at the Thunderbird Awards Assembly. Cyndi Woodbury, Cedar City, was named Woman of the Year. Miss Woodbury was honored for outstanding contribution last year. She year. Houle, a senior communications major, is from Dugway. In the school of education, Pestalozzi Awards for outstanding teacher education graduates were presented Jill Henderson, Las Vegas, for elementary education and Janice Mae Bickmore, Cedar City for secondary education. Both Pestalozzi winners wUl grauate with high honors, Miss Henderson with a BA in elementary education, Miss Bickmore with a BA in business education. Kelly Thompson, a two year letterman in football, was named the Outstanding Physical Education Student. Thompson is a senior physical education major form Salt Lake City. Honors for the Outstanding Out-standing Female Athlete and Outstanding Male Athlete went to Mary Damiani, a junior from Chicago Heights, Illinois, and to Phil Howa, a senior from Price. Miss Damiani has lettered for two years in gymnastics and track and is a SUSC honor student. Howa lettered let-tered four years in football and competed in national wrestling finals two years. He graduates this year with a BA in physical education. John Dalton Reese, Cedar City, was named the Outstanding Out-standing Physical Science Student. Reese will graduate earning a BS in mathematics. Ronald E. Johnson, St. George, was named the Outstanding Life Science Student. Johnson graduates with high honors with a BS in technology. Jack Stokes, assistant professor of behavioral and social sciences, received the ASSUSC President's Award which is annually presented by the student body president to the nonstudent who has given the most outstanding service to student activities during the year. SUSC student Mark Potter, a senior physical science major from Ivins, received the 1979-80 Booster Award for his overall support sup-port of SUSC activities and special recognition for his work with the March of Dimes Marathon. The SUSC Rodeo Club, a major contributor to SUSC's highly successful Wild West Week, earned the Prestige Arrow for spring quarter contributions. The Prestige Spear, annually made for overall contribution con-tribution made during the school year, was awarded the SUSC Ambassadors Club, a student organization which acts as a general welcoming : committee for campus visitors and users at many '; campus and off-campus off-campus functions. Other presentations include in-clude an Utah Historical Society Award, presented to senior Lawrence B. Esplin, Cedar City. Esplin will receive a BA in history Friday. He graduates from SUSC with honors. Shelly Benson, a junior business administration major from Cedar City, was presented the 1979-80 Sterling Silver Award, an annual presentation of the Associated Women's Council. Randy Daniels will graduate Friday with high honors, earning a BA in business administration. Man of the Year honors went to Eric Houle, who ran for and won an uprecidented second term as SUSC student body president this I Cyndi Woodbury Chris Kerecman, a junior political science-communications science-communications major from Orem, was honored as Utah's Truman Scholar for 1980-81. Kerecman is currently in Washington, D.C., working in Senator Orrin Hatch's office. Also honored at the annual assembly were recipients of three prestigious SUSC scholarships. Kevin Jones, a sophomore politcal science major from Cedar City, has been awarded the Faculty-Senate Faculty-Senate Scholarship. Joy Scott, a sophomore family life major from Cedar City, has received the Staff Association Scholarship and Nonie Kosanke, a senior elementary education major from LaSalle, has received the $1,000 Institutional Council Scholarship. SUSC's valedictorian was presented. Jill Cummings Shipp, Heber City, will address graduates Friday in cepted into a veterinary program at Colorado State University. In the school of arts and letters, Margaret "Muffy" Young was named the outstanding student. The 65-year-old honor student is well-known for her column, "The Grousing Place," which appears in the college newspaper, and she is secretary to the SUSC Literary Guild. Christine W'nterrose, Cedar City, received the award as the 1979-80 Outstanding Out-standing Performing Arts Student. Mrs. Winterrose graduates Friday with high honors, earning a BA in music. The well-known musician has appeared in many SUSC tneatrical and music department productions and as a madrigal for the Utah Shakespearean Festival for several seasons. In the school of business Rita Kleese Twitchell, the Outstanding Business Education Student, was unavailable to receive her award because she was in the Valley View Medical Center with a newborn baby boy. Mrs. Twitchell graduates with high honoirs earning a BA in business education. Curt Wilde was honored as the Outstanding Industrial Education Student. Wilde, from Lopoc, Calif, graduates Friday with honors, earning a BS in industrial |
