Show Lake Powell Hits High Lake Powell rose to a record elevation of 3,684.92 in mid-May and is expected to fill to capacity by late June or early July, Water and Power Resources Service Regional Director Bill Plummer announced. If run-off continues as anticiapted, it will be the first time in the lake's 17 year history that the water level has reached full capacity. Plummer explained that it has taken this long to fill the storage unit to capacity because of the large size of the lake and because the Water and Power Resources Service is required to release significant amounts of water to users in the H Lower Colorado River Basin in accordance with the Colorado River Compact. The lake is expected to rise another 15 feet after run-off from surrounding areas is completed. At full capacity, the lake will ' contain 25 million acre feet as opposed to the 22,650,000 acre feet it now contains. "Lake Powell recreation users should experience no "significant difference in the area as a result of the in-J in-J creased water level," Plummer stated. |
