Show Grant for Refugees Local schools in Utah will share a $212,664 grant to help in educating refugee children from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, Sen. Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch said in a joint announcement. an-nouncement. The Department of Education is awarding the money through the Indochina In-dochina Refugee Children Assistance Act. A totalof $11,999,663 will be distributed throughout the country to help educate 66,300 children. That averages just under $181 per child. In Utah, 1,175 children will be covered, or about 1.77 percent of the national total. By contrast, Utah's population . comprises only about six-tenths of one percent of the U.S. total. The federal money will be distributed to state education agencies, which in turn will distribute the money on the local level. The Indochina Refugee Children Assistance Act provides the aid for children admitted into th United States after after Jan. 1, 1977. The law was amended last Nov. 20, to provide $12 million to fund the program, with priority in providing services given to children entering school for the first timeduring the school year 1979-80. |
