Show Bickmore - Henderson win Pestalozzi Award $ '4' Two Southern Utah State College coeds have been honored for demonstrating outstanding potential as teachers. Janice Mae Bickmore, Cedar City, and Jill Henderson, Hen-derson, Las Vegas, Nev. have received the 1979-80 Pestalozzi Awards, presentations made in honor of the Swiss educator Henry Pestalozzi by the SUSC School of Education. "Henry Pestalozzi is often recognized as the 'father' of modern education," James M. Miller, dean of the school of education, said. "He believed in a three-fold program of education-education of the heart, education of the head, and education of the hand." "Awards made in honor of this famous educator have been presented annually at SUSC since the end of the 1966-67 school year, one to the outstanding elementary education graduate, the other to the student who has daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. Evan Henderson, 3213 Nottingham Drive, Las Vegas. The 1976 graduate of Chaparral High School was honored by the SUSC School of Education her junior year president, and was named the recipient of the college's Sterling Silver Award. She plans to teach business in a h igh school in the Salt Lake Valley this fall. as a recipient of the college's prestigious Mary Muir Dunham Scholarship. She is an active member of the LDS Church, serving in several capacities in a college ward, and has also participated in student government at SUSC, being elected a junior class senator. Ms. Henderson has accepted ac-cepted a teaching position with the Clark County School District, Las Vegas. Ms. Bickmore is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rulon Dean Bickmore, Cedar City. The 1976 graduate of Cedar High School has been actively involved in academic and cocuricular activities at SUSC, most recently appearing ap-pearing as Micaela in the opera "Carmen". She has also presented the college as "Miss SUSC" in a "Miss Utah" Pageant, won the title of Snow Queen, served as a sophomore class senator, LDSSA vice the potential for being an outstanding secondary , teacher," Miller explained. The award recipients are selected each year by the teacher education faculty. The winners were chosen from a field of 12 candidates, six for elementary education, six for secondary education. "There are over 80 graduates from the school of education this year," Miller said. "It is indeed an honor to announce Ms. Bickmore as the Pestolazolli Award winner in secondary education and Ms. Henderson Hen-derson as the 1979-80 recipient of the Pestalozzi Award in elementary education." Both recipients will graduate this week at SUSC with high honors. Ms. Henderson in elementary education, Ms. Bickmore with a major in business education, minor in music.
