Show Super stars are champs TOO LATE FOR LAST WEEK-The Manila Super Stars were the champion team for the Ladies Volleyball Tournament Tourna-ment held at the Manila High School gymnasium on December 15, 17 & 18. Second place team was the Lucky Ladies who were also a Manila team. Third place was won by The Seniors, Manila High School seniors. The Bumpers from McKinnon, Wyoming were awarded Sportsmanship. Those players named to the All-Tourney team were Peggy Griggs, Louise Neff, Valerie Behunin, Esta Comer, Wendy Anderson, Kathy Parkinson, Cindy French, and Blenda Larsen. Temperatures were fair this week in Manila although a few nights it dipped to nearly zero - just 5 degrees above. On the 27th day of December 1.25 inches of frost and snow fell which brought .14 of an inch of moisture. This brings the total for snowfall to 4.75 for this year and the moisture to .27 of an inch. The roads are nearly bare with ice in a few places. Away from the roads there is between 3-4 inches of crusted snow. Daggett County School closed for the Christmas holiday on December 21. Classes resumed on Wednesday, January 2. The furnaces at the Manila High School took a holiday and caused the custodian some unexpected work when he filled the furnace full of coal one day. This all had to be taken out. Home for the holidays at the home of Bishop and Mrs. Deri Reed were their daughters, Debbie from beauty school in Logan, and Derlene from USU in Logan. Visiting at the Norman W. Long home during the holiday season was Mrs. Long's mother, Mrs. Vonda Batty of Vernal, and the Norman Long's son, Devan, who has been attending USU in Logan. Robert L. Ellsworth, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ellsworth, will start school at USU in Logan, on January 3. Mrs. Robert Gerber of Logan is visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Briggs. Connie Reed went to Circle, Montana on December 5 to be with her daughter, Mrs. John Isaacs, the former Katherine Pallesen, who had a baby boy, Michael John Isaacs. Michael weighed 7 pounds and 11 ounces at birth and was 20 inches in length. The Issacs have 2 daughters Angela Kay, 5, and Amy Michelle, 2. Mrs. Reed stayed 3 weeks while Katherine recovered from surgery. She returned to Manila on December 28. Mrs. Curtis Slaugh is home from Idaho Falls, Idaho, where she spent 8 days visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Slagowski, and her husband Curtis Slaugh. She also visited with her grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Peterson, and children and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Parker and baby. While Mrs. Slaugh was in Idaho Falls her brother, Lorn Roberts, and Mrs. Roberts of Blackfoot, Idaho came to visit her. Not as much skating was done on the Manila Elementary School pond as was expected during the holiday. The frosty snow made it rough and it needs reflooding as the snow partially melted and then crusted. Many families gathered at relatives homes for family dinners on Christmas. Mr. and Mrs. William Robinson drove to Rock Springs to have dinner with their son, Art Robinson, and his family. |
