The match was tied at 1-1 when Hacking nabbed a neutral with 19 seconds left and the contest was forced into overtime. "It was a pretty close match, I was . just going loi a standup and I got it with 19 seconds left in the match, I was trying to play it safe and not make any mistakes," stated Uintah tussler, Matt Hacking. Hacking added, "He (Stassinos) was in better shape that I was and I was gassed going into the overtime." One of the referees at the Vernal Tournament of Champions, Billy Murray, remarked, "Matt tried more escapes and rode a little more solid, and that is why he was selected as the winner." "There wasn't any doubt in anyone's mind that Matt Hacking won the match with Ron Stassinos in overtime," stated Uintah wresllini? coach. Chuck Henry. "Hacking made three shots at takedowns and the third time he almost got the single in the first round. Hacking was on the bottom in the second round and he tried three setouts and two standups for escapes. If points would have been given for attempts then Hacking was ahead, 8-0, after two rounds. Hacking controlled Stassinos in the third period. Stassinos didn't make any honest attempts to escape." Rock Springs didn't have a 98 pounder, so Uintah wrestler, Brett Brown, competed as an independent. All Brown did was advance into the finals and decisioned state champion, Josh Reynolds, Uintah, 7-2, for first place. "It feels great to win first place, and I wanted to wrestle aggressively." If Uintah's Ken Cobb had been pinned iastead of decisioned 5-3 by Fred Bath, Rock Springs, in the heavyweight final then Rock Springs would have won the meet by one point. "I was out to win no matter what," stated Cobbs. "There is no way that Kenny Cobbs is going to get pinned to cost us a tournament," tour-nament," said Chuck Henry. Uintah toppled Rock Springs by one point, 135-134, 135-134, for first place in the Vernal Tournament of Champions, Saturday. "It doesn't matter whether you win by 100 or '2 a point it is still a win. We won by one point, but for us it was a 45-point 45-point margin because Rock Springs defeated us by 44 points at their tournament tour-nament and we nipped them by one point in Vernal. This has been one of the best Tournaments of Champions in a number of years. Nampa, Idaho, finished the first day of action with 64 points, but exploded Saturday for 49 counters," said Henry. Ron HorrocKs and Brett Brown pocketed first place titles in the Uintah Tournament, December 29 in Vernal. Brown and Horrocks picked up their .second first place titles in a row at the Vernal Tournament. "Last week I wrestled at 112 in the Uintah Tournament Tour-nament because we didn't have anyone at that weight. It feels better to take first place in the Vernal Tournament than in the Uintah Tournament," said Ron Horrocks. "Everyone in the state and Vernal knows that Uintah has two tough 98 pounders in Josh Reynolds and Brett Brown. It just happened to be the night that Brett was hotter than Josh. Brett has only defeated Josh two times this year," said Henry. "Ron Horrocks is really coming on. He has paid his dues. He is in his third year and he is reaping his awards now due to experience he has gained on junior varsity teams and by wrestling behind state champions, Frank Jaramillo and Josh Reynolds." The Uintah Utes defeated Rock Springs by one point for first place in the Vernal Tournament and Uintah won many dual meets by one counters. One of those contests was a 1-0 win by Billy Bedell of Uintah over J.D. Adams of Steamboat Springs. "I had never beaten him before. I was ahead by two points at the Steamboat Springs Tournament, but he pinned me with a 4 Nelson," said Billy Bedell. "He beat me 5-3 in a dual meet in Vernal on some dumb mistakes. I was thinking of revenge real bad in the Vernal Tournament Tour-nament because I had never beaten him before. The one time the match was really scary was when he got up, but I pushed him out of bounds." |
