Show Quilters prepare for USU contest There is a practicial application of the old saying: "A stitch in time saves nine". Now is the time to begin preparing prepar-ing your quilt to enter in the quilt contest con-test held at Utah Slate University's "Festival of the American West." Aug. 1 through Aug. 9. The quilt contest Is a juried show sponsored by the College of Family Life and Extension Service at L'SU. The theme for this year's quilt show is Flora andor Fauna i plants andor animals). According to Theta Johnson, extension exten-sion clothing specialist, "The contest aims to encourage and preserve the traditional folk-art of quilt making in Utah. It is in keeping with the theme of the Festival of the American West, which features the old handicrafts used by the settlers of the Wi -t " Prizes will be given for state contest winners: First place $200, second place $100, third place 'M. and honorable mention $25. Miss Johnson outlined the roles for entering the contest. Fach contestant must: 1. Design and make a qinlt with an original design. The quilt may be made by an individual or group. It may be pieced, hand embroidered, or hand ap pliqued, or a combination of these methods. 2. Participate in an ana quilt contest to be eligible for the stale contest, 3. Have designed and made the quilt within the last three years. 4. Not have entered this quilt in a previous Utah State University quilt contest. 5. Be a resident of Utah. 6. Write a documentation (description) (descrip-tion) of how the design was developed using references, diagrams, and sketches. sket-ches.
