' Alfamonf Lcady longhorns topple Vernal Panthers The Altamont Longhorns knocked the zero out of the Vernal Junior High's 4-0 record as they thumped the Panther girl hoopsters, 40-28, in Vernal, Thursday. Altamont jumped out to a 10 to 2 lead in the first quarter. Michelle Green put in a field goal and free throw, and Deah Bennion popped in a charity toss, which cut Altamont's lead to 13 to 6 early in the second quarter. Vernal's Kim Drollinger flipped in a two-pointer and Chris Blaisure added two field goals to make the score at the end of the second quarter, Altamont, 18 and Vernal, 12. Altamont's Sabra Barton exploded for three field goals and Tracy Orme put in two free throws for a 26 to 12 lead for the Longhorns early in the third quarter. Tia Liebhardt scored Vernal's first point in the second half when she connected on a free throw at the 2:30 mark. Thirty seconds later Vicki Fowler fired in Vernal's first field goal in the second half. The score at the end of the third quarter was: Altamont, 32 and Vernal, 15. The Longhorns' Sabra Barton nabbed the ball during a jump ball, and starts dribbling the ball in the wrong d.rec-tion. d.rec-tion.
