Show Union wins first game The Union Cougars gained their first win after eight losses in a row when they thumped Grantsville, 65 to 54, on the road, Friday. The win improved Union's record to 1-8 and places them in first place in Region Nine at 1-0. Grantsville bombed Union in the first quarter, 12-4. However, the Cougars caught fire in the point scoring department as they outscored the Cowboys, 22 to 9, for a second quarter lead of 26 to 21. Union had a three-point lead of 43-40 after three quarters and the final score was Union, 65, and Grantsville, 54. The Cougars outscored Grantsville, 22 to 14 in the fourth quarter. The top scorer for Union was Tracy Dye with 18 points. Dye fired in 8 field goals and hit 2 out of 3 free throws. Also scoring points for Union were: Tracy Neilson, 14; Clay Harrison, 11; Kyle Mansfield, 10; Kary Eldredge. 4; Steve Ferguson, 4 and Brandon Draper, 4. Union put in 27 field goals and hit 11 out of 19 free throws. Union will host the Morgan Trojans, Friday at 5:45 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Cougars will battle the Pioneers in Lehi, January 18 and will host Wasatch, January 25. Morgan toppled In-termountain, In-termountain, 85 to 60 and Wasatch downed Lehi in overtime, 55-53. The standings in Region Nine are: Union, Morgan, Wasatch, first, 1-0 and In-termountain, In-termountain, Grantsville and Lehi, Fourth, 0-1. |
