Show Vernal Glenda Landon I ; Phone 789-2417 J Millie Haws returns home VERNAL SPECIAL-Mrs. Millie K. Haws arrived home Friday, Jan. 4, after a holiday vacation in California with her son and family, Kay M. and Jean Haws and their three daughters of Bountiful. On the way down south they visited former Vernal residents Mr. ! and Mrs. Victor Bascom and family in I Victorville, Nevada. He and his son John are artists and are famous for their brass sculptures. They then went to the home of Millie's brother, Jay A. Kay and his wife Peg, i who are also formerly of Vernal and who live in Capistrano Beach. Their home was the headquarters for the travelers while they were in California. Jay, who is now 91 years old, fractured a leg two years ago, but he has discarded discard-ed his crutches and can now get around with a cane. He is an artist and there is still much demand for his paintings. His 1 two daughters, Nila Kay of San Juan and Mona K. Hill of Hemmett, also came and stayed there during the visit of the Haws family from Utah. They visited many relatives and friends from San Diego to San Francisco, Fran-cisco, including Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Kay of Borrego near San Diego and Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Kay of Ramona, Bob and Jeannie Ingham in San Juan, and Dick and Julie Ingham of Santa Ana. They attended the Tournament of Roses parade on New Year's day and afterward had the privilege of walking through acres of Pasadena Park among the gorgeous floral floats and taking pictures there. Another highlight of the trip was visiting the Los Angeles State and County Arboreta Botanical Gardens at Arcadia. They also visited many tourist attractions including Sea World, Disneyland, Marineland, and several museums. On the return trip they stopped in St. George and visited with Owen and Mabel Johnstun. Owen is a former resident of Vernal and a brother of George E. Johnstun. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Bowden, their daughter Alene and her friend Darcy Swain, returned Jan. 3 from a very enjoyable en-joyable trip to California. They left the day after Christmas, drove to Anaheim and visited Disneyland, Knotts Berry ; Farm, and other tourist attractions in southern California. They went to the coast at San Diego and from there took a bus tour into Mexico at Tijuana. On their return trip they stopped over in St. George and visited Mrs. Andrew Mc-Conkie, Mc-Conkie, a former Vernal resident, and report that she is quite well. ' Mrs. William Mann visited in Salt Lake City last week at the home of her youngest daughter, Wilma Stewart. Mr. and Mrs. Gaylen (Karen) Merrill and two children, Rickie, 3, and Kara, 6 months, of Jackson, Wyoming, came home for a visit with Karen's parents, Mayor and Mrs. Sam Snyder, during the holidays. They were here for a week and returned home on Dec. 30. Word was received by George Johnstun last weekend of the death of Mrs. Grant (Doris) Christensen of Boise, Id., on Thursday, Jan. 3. The funeral will be held Tuesday, the 8th in Boise. William Siddoway, Dean of the Division Divi-sion of Continuing Education at BYU came New Year's day to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Siddoway, and enjoyed New Year's dinner with their family. He also serves as one of the branch presidents for a group of 71 elders at the Missionary Training Center in Provo. Dean Lambert of Salt Lake City came last Saturday to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Lambert, for about 10 days. He expects to return home Monday. Mon-day. Mr. and Mrs. Kim Oliverson and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Greg Nyman and son returned home New Year's Day from Cache Valley. They had visited family members and friends in Smithfield, Preston, and Logan during : the holidays. Cecil Newell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mickey Newell, spent the holidays at ' home and returned to Logan today, Jan. 3. He has been attending school at USU where he is majoring in Animal Husbandry. He is working toward an American Farmer degree and will submit sub-mit his application to the State FFA Association at its annual meeting in Salt Lake City in March. Wayne Calder, son of Mr. and Mrs. i Earl Calder, was home for the holidays. i He is a student at BYU and returned to Provo on Monday, Jan. 7. , Mr. and Mrs. Michael Batty and five i chjldren of Riverton came after Christmas to visit his parents, the Paul Battys. They spent several days on the mountain and enjoyed snowmobiling. Michael is a vice president in charge of administration for Gallbrcth and Green Insurance Company in Riverton. 1 Mrs. Charles Let.erich (Jeannine ,' Gardiner) has been home for a visit. She flew from Los Angeles to Salt Lake and then visited her brother Verlin Gardiner Gar-diner and family in Bountiful. Verlin is presently serving as bishop of Woods Cross Third Ward. Mr and Mrs. Dick Gardiner drove out to Bountiful and brought Jeannine back with them for a three day visit with relatives and friend here. She returned to Salt l.ake City today, Jan. 3 and will fly home on Sunday from there. Jeannine is teaching in an elementary school, is serving as ward Primary president, and also teaches in Relief Society. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hunting, daughter Tara and a foster Indian daughter Elberta, drove to Centerville and spent New Year's Eve with Marilyn's brother and his wife, Duane and Eula Price. Next day they went to Morgan and visited the Lorin Tonks family, former residents of Vernal. The Huntings returned home Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ashel J. Evans visited during the school vacation at the home of their son, the Ashel A. Evans in Kaysville who are parents of a new baby girl, their third child. On Christmas Eve they attended a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin (DeShel) Watkins in Orem. DaShel teaches kindergarten half days at Franklin Elementary School in Provo. Pro-vo. She became ill with flu so her mother stayed to help care for her two children, and Ashel returned to Vernal. He went back to Orem on New Year's Eve and brought Darlene home Tuesday. Tues-day. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Goodrich and son, Jan, left December 30 and traveled to Grand Junction, CO. where they visited their son's family, the Brent Hatches. They then drove on to Mesa, Arizona, to visit Mr. and Mrs. Barry Hatch and family. They returned home Friday, January 4. Jan left Sunday morning for Provo where he will resume his studies at BYU. |
