Show CLIFF MEMMOTT, Edllor SUPPORT OF HIGHWAY 40 DESIRED OF UTAH .... Tuesday at noon four enthusiastic Vernal businessmen, ( who are actively supporting the newly reorganized Highway 40 Association, met with about 25 Roosevelt motel, hotel, !U and cafe operators, plus retail business and professional men to stimulate support of Highway 40. Heard on the program were Mayor Henry B. Millecam, Wiley Baucum and B. Frank Ward, who talked on the benefits derived from the tourist business, which today is the third largest industry in the nation. Vernal has set a fine example of tangible support by collecting $24000 as that city's contribution to the Highway 40 promotion fund. That's all Utah has come in with, as compared with nearly $12,000 from Colorado towns on 40. Mayor Homer P. Edwards is Roosevelt's representative on the board, and from Duchesne comes a vice president, Chester Lyman. It is the responsibility of these two' gentle-V gentle-V men to spear-head a finance drive in their respective cities '.' ... A committee was named at the Tuesday meeting to assist Mr. Edwards the personnel of which will be the Motel, Hotel and Cafe operators. . . They will meet in the near future and determine the pro-rata share each establish-1 establish-1 ment should invest in the tourist industry along Highway 40. I It's positive that Duchesne City, along with Roosevelt, J Heber and other towns situated along the highway will share proportionately in the tourist business, and it is up to the I people in Duchesne to get on the band-wagon and support I, the project. Something I'm sure the people will see the value of. j Mayor Millecam came through with a thought or two that substantiates comments I have made thru this column at intervals since taking over the editorship of the two v Duchesne County newspapers . . . "Keep your city clean jl and free from debris and litter if you want a tourist to stop U in your city," Mayor Millecam said. A motel operator he told a story of how some tourists stopped at his place last "J summer. When they registered for their room that night r?i they said they had definitely decided to stay at Roosevelt jfj that night, but when they took a brief stroll along Main M Street they discovered the city had forgotten to clean up :-J for a few days thus a negative reaction or opinion was r. formed, and Roosevelt lost several tourist dollars. . . There is no way of knowing how many other -people might have spent the -nighi-in-Roosevelt,- bur changed "their ntina be- ' r. cause of the same reason. Z. Roosevelt positively must do something about this sit uation that has existed in the past. . . The city has an ordinance ordi-nance that sets forth the obligation the individual merchant or property owner has . in this problem it just needs to' be enforced. . . Thus, it's the merchant who gains from the tourist dollar, so why not accept the challenge and vow ; to keep things cleaned up in front or along side of each individual in-dividual place of business, and then bring pressue to' bear to see that it is removed daily, -i When the time comes to support the Highway 40 Asso- i ciation, it should not be considered a donation, but an in- vestment in your share of the tourist business that will come this was as soon as travel is permissable. 58 v E v Sj "Our country needs its newspapers more today than ever before in this fight against Communism.
