Show Re dm en face Payson Rams in Playoff for State berth The Cedar High School Redmen will travel t sto Fillmore where they will meet the Payson Rams Friday evening for the right to enter the Class 3A state basketball tournament which opens at he Marriot Center on the Brigham Young University campus Monday. The Redmen who lost in an overtime battle to Dixie for the Region XI title I Friday night in Hurricane, will have to defeat the Rams Friday in order to advance ad-vance to the state tourney. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and tickets for the event are available at the Cedar High School or may be purchased at the door Friday evening in Fillmore. The playoff is one of two being held in the state to round out the entries for the 16 team tournament. Coach Dick Hobbs and his Redmen have to be the favorites in Friday's game. The Payson Rams are seventh in the standings of Region 6 with a no win and 13 loss record. It's interesting to note that of the 18 3A schools in the state this year 16 will advance ad-vance to the state playoffs. ' Dixie, by virtue of their victory for the Region XI crown, over the Redmen have already won the right to enter. They will be pitted against the Judge Memorial Bulldogs in the opening round of the tournament. That game is slated for Tuesday, March 8 at 8:10 p.m. For the Redmen, who are expected to win F'riday, they would also advance to the tournament and would be scheduled in the opening round to meet Bingham High School, also on Tuesday, at 4:10 p.m. Dixie, and the winner of the Cedar- , Payson battle Friday are both in the lower bracket of the tournament scheduled. The state tournament actually opens Monday with upper bracket participants slated to meet in Monday's round. Lower bracket entries will meet Tuesday. The Upper bracket teams will go at it again Wednesday and lower bracket teams would not play again until Thursday. On Friday and Saturday the two brackets would then merger to the finale Saturday evening in which the consolation and . championship teams will be crowned for the 1976 year. Coach Don Lay and the Flyers in meeting Judge Memorial in the opening round are pitted against the fifth place team from Region V. Should the Redmen advance to state their opponent, Bingham, . is second in Region V behind Davis, the defending 3A state champions and currently the top ranked 3A club in the state. Another top contender in the state is American Fork, winner of the Region VI title with only one loss on their league record. |
