Redmen Reserves play outstanding game,but lose to Dixie Flyers 76-73 By Klien Hollo Dixie Flyers staged a come from behind, over-time victory over the Cedar High School Redmen Friday night at Hurricane to capture the Region XI championship and win a berth in the State 3A (basketball tournament. But despite the loss the Red-men Red-men were impressive in overcoming over-coming a rash of problems that developed throughout the week that resulted in the discipline of three key members of the squad by disallowing them to participate par-ticipate in the playoff for the Region crown. Coach Dick Hobbs and the High School administration must be complimented for their action .and the entire Cedar High School studentbody and basketball team could be proud of their efforts in the contest. The noteable effort of team members who saw major action for the first time during the season was commendable and proved to be nearly enough to take to task the strong Dixie Flyer crew.' Final score in the highly emotional contest was 76 to 73 for the Flyers. The game was highlighted with some strong individual performances per-formances on both teams and some outstanding team efforts by both clubs. For the Redmen it was Charles Judd, who drove the middle throughout the night to lead 'the offensive attack for the Redmen, with Steve Hair turning in a fine game on the boards and on the court as well. Robert Morris, who started his first game for the Redmen in this outing must also come in for comment for his fine defensive 'effort and for his ability to control the ball for the Redmen. Both Judd and Hair wound up the evening with 25 points to their credit. For the Flyers Kip Staheli put on an outstanding scoring display in the first half as he tanked 21 points. He was held to just nine in the second half, with all of his second half points coming in the fourth period and in the overtime. Bruce Hurst was limited in the first half to just Jour points, but he came on to lead the attack for the Flyers in the second half and wound up the evening with 21 points. The first quarter of play was a near stalemate as the two clubs battled back and forth. Dixie took an early lead only to have the Redmen bounce back and knot the score at 7 all on 10 footer by Hair. The Redmen went out in front on a bucket by Foley midway in the period, but Hurst and Staheli lead the Flyers back out in front 13-9. ' " Those three buckets were countered by three by Judd to tie the score at 15 all but the Flyers again forged ahead and held a 20-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter on a 15 foot jumper by Staheli at the buzzer. Cedar dominated the second quarter of play and held an eight point advantage of 36-28 before the Flyers tanked three buckets in the last minute to narrow the margin to two at half, 36-34 for the Redmen. As the second half opened again the Redmen on buckets by Judd, Harvey and Foley, forged a lead, a lead they maintained throughout the period to hold a six point advantage at 52-46 at the three-quarter mark. As the fourth period opened Judd connected a three point play, and Hair tanked one from the field to give the Redmen a 11 point margin at 57-46. Midway in the period the Redmen still led by 11 at 65-54, but the Dixie press began to take its toll as the Redmen began a control game. The Flyers reeled off 11 unanswered unan-swered points to knot the score at 65-all and although Morris connected on a pair of foul shots with 1 minute remaining to give the Redmen a lead, Staheli came back to connect from the field to tie the score. He missed a foul shot and the Redmen had possession with 54 seconds remaining. Coach Dick Hobbs Redmen controlled the ball until the final three seconds when Hair attempted at-tempted a shot from the corner. It missed and the game was in overtime. In the overtime Hurst started the scoring for the Flyers with a sweeping hook shot and Gary Allred connected on a pair of fouls to give the Flyers a four point margin. Cedar could never quite make up the difference. All of the remaining five points for the Flyers came from the charity stripe. |
