Show Vater Levels In Utah Reach New Lows By Harry D. Good Ground-water levels in Utah during; the first six months of the I960 water year (Oct. 1, 1959 to Mar. 31, 1960) were below average av-erage or reached new lows in 13 of the 16 wells for which records rec-ords are included in this report In only three wells were the levels lev-els about or above average. The well at Mona recorded the only continuous above-average water level for the six-month period. Near-average water levels In the wells at .Elsinore and An-nabella An-nabella were both above and below be-low average. The three-year rec-I rec-I ord of these wells, however, are too short , to indicate long-term trends. In the 13 wells that had below average water levels, seven wells, those at Woods Cross, Grants-ville, Grants-ville, Lehl, Fillmore, Beryl and the two at Cedar City, establish-, ed new or equaled previous record-low water levels from October Octo-ber tluough March. The wells at Ogden, Holladay, Erda, and Ephralm continued the general downward trend of be-low-average water levels from ilu! preceding year. New record-low water levels were established 'during January Janu-ary at the Milford well and during dur-ing October, November and December De-cember at the Paragonah well. Water levels in these two wells continued below average during the remaining months of the report re-port period. The wells that consistently reached new lows during the report re-port period, those at Woods Cross, Grantsville, Fillmore, Beryl and the two at Cedar City, were continuing con-tinuing trends that began during dur-ing the growing season in J959 when low precipitation caused high pumping. Precipitation continued con-tinued below normal during the early part of the 1960 water year, and the slightly Increased preclpltalon in March has had no noticeable effect on the water wa-ter levels. The end-of -December- water levels in 1959 in the wells at Fillmore, Milford, Beryl and Cedar Ce-dar City "R" were lower than the levels at the end of 1959. At Fillmore, Fill-more, Beryl arid Cedar City "R" the water levels were at an all-time all-time low for end of December. These long-term trends indicate that mnrp water la withdrawn from the ground-water reservoirs each year than la replenished by recharge. |
