Show Belated Battle Formed'Against Liquor Commission Package Agency The approaching Installation of a liquor package agency In Parowan In the near future has .been foremost In the thought of I a large segment of the city's pop-1 I ulation , during the past week,! with concerted action being U- ken by a large group of citizens to forestall the move bein made. As the result of the announcement announce-ment by Mayor Josopti ia.. that th citv council would wcl-j come the opinions of any person or group before any action ws taken by that body, a large delegation, dele-gation, opposed to the establisn-ment establisn-ment of a liquor store in Parowan, Paro-wan, appeared at the meeting of the City Council on Monday eve-I eve-I ning to voice their protests. Spokesmen for the group were A. C. Hatch, former mayor, coun. rilman and local high school Instructor; In-structor; Jess Guymon. Iron County commissioner; Howard D. Knight, president of Parowan Stake, Max S. Dalley. principal, Parowan High School, and M- Golda Guymon. All presented th'r vVws and gave reasons for opposing the atore. i At the close of the discussion a motion was made and seconded, rt the council go on record as being opposed to the establish- ment of the store In Parowan i ITrW motion passed the council with one dissenting vote. The council then sanctioned the circulation" cir-culation" of a petition opDosintr I the store and A. C. Hatch and Max Dalley were requested to fftrmu'ti the said petition with the object to get as many reg- lstered voters of the community to plae their signature upon It 1 as possible. We understand that these petl-tlons petl-tlons have been placed In severil business houses In the city where Interested citizens are urged t" sign them In the presence of a notary public. These' petitions will then be forwarded to the State Liquor Commission with a reouest that that group reconsider recon-sider Its action In placing the liquor store in Parowan. Commissioner Guymon has M-ken M-ken the matter to Governor George D. Clyde In an effort to forestall the store but what will come out of this plea ' to the state's chief executive remains to be seen. i But reports published In bath of the state's big daily papers quote the chairman of the liquor commission as saying that the protests against the store cami! too late. Liquor Commission chairman Paul V. Kelly, in a statement issued the first of the week, said the liquor store will be opened in Parowan as soon as l building can be remodeled suited to house it. Arrangements for the opening of the agency have already been made and its ooening date Is contingent on readying the location loca-tion regardless of the petition, according to the liquor commission commis-sion spokesman. |
