Show I East Elementary Hear Talks on Home Safety j During January of 1965, the j East Elementary School will participate par-ticipate in a school -wide Safety j Program. Laoh grade will re-search re-search and present material about Safety Health and First Aid. Already they have had two very interesting talks by Ex-Fire! Chief Ross Glass and Police Chief Kent Hoyt. Mr. Glass emphasized the fol- ' lowing points about fire safety at this time of year. I He said that fireplaces are not places to burn trash, paper floats j up and lands on the roof and often of-ten sets fire to the building. He reminded the children not to play with matches or the fire in the fireplace. An empty box to gather gath-er up papers on Chirstmas morning morn-ing could be the project of the children In the family. They could also water the tree so that It won't be too dry. Watch your( electric wires and lights. Don't leave the lights on the tree when you leave the house. Don't leave the tree up very long after Christmas. He instructed them on how to call the Fire Department to turn in an alarm. It's very important to give your name and address and tell the type of fire and to be out In front to direct them to it as soon as they arrive. 1 He told them what to do In ' case they are In a house that Is ' on fire. He advised all the children child-ren to practice fire drills in their 1 own homes. He said to figure out two possible escape routes. He hoped parents would alert baby ' sitters of the home fire rules. Mr. Glass emphasized that we always keep cool and calm in case of a fire. After discussing many causes of fire he asked children to remind their parents not to chase fire engines, but to pull off the road in case they hear the fire engine. Police Chief Kent Hoyt asked the children to use the crosswalks cross-walks provided for them, Instead of jay-walklng. He asked them to refrain from cutting across people's property but to use the sidewalks. When it Is stormy it is beter to use the sidewalks side-walks than the middle of the road. Cars cannot be controlled on the slick roads and you are adding an extra danger by walking walk-ing there, he said. He reminded them that bi jw-balling jw-balling is fine on the play ground when they are playing with others oth-ers who want to snowball, but it Is a dangerous and mean thing to do when they throw at someone some-one who doesn't expect to be hit with a snowball, especially, he said, don't throw at cars. Many accidents happen when the driver's driv-er's attention is diverted by a snowball. The Chief also asked the children child-ren not to hook , rides behind automobiles. Tiiis is very dangerous, danger-ous, as drivers In the opposite direction cannot see the one who is throwing. He also warned them not to accept rides, candy, toys, etc from strangers. He talked about bicycle bicy-cle safety and about learning the rules. He asked them to please get off their bikes and walk them across the crosswalks. Always keep on the extreme right of the road when bicycle riding and lean hand slgna's, he ss Id. He cautioned the children about shop-lifting at this time of the year. Pointing out that many criminals started out with something some-thing small. Chief Hoyt said that the Police Department always wants to be on a friendly basis with children child-ren and that the children could cooperate by obeying the city, state and country laws.
