Show Si I LJLilIi 1 , 1 Z JOHN BENSON FAMILY Bensons "Family of Month" in Hunter Ward The Hunter 5th Ward of the LDS Church, located in the Soutn Salt Lake area, publishes a monthly bulletin giving accounts of ward activities, and naming a ward personality family. The November No-vember issue ot the bulletin featured fea-tured the John V. Benson family, and gave the following to substantiate sub-stantiate its reason for so doing. "Everyone is aware of the growth of the community. Eaci family moving in has successes anif Individuality that makes others want to become better acquainted ac-quainted with them. Such are the qualities of the John Benson family fa-mily of the Hunter Fifth Ward. To sports fans the mere mention men-tion of John's name rinjs a bell because lie will always be remembered re-membered as one of the great LYU basketball stars. John was born in Cedar City and attended school in Parowan. his home town where he led the Parowan High School basketball team to its first State tournament spot In ' years. He was selected as an all American High School basketball player but "mumps" prevented him from playing in the All-American All-American game that year in' Kentucky. With a scholarship to the BYU, 1 his outstanding basketball performance per-formance continued. He was all-Conference all-Conference honorable mention for two years and all-American his senior year. He was voted the outstanding player In the Rocky Mountain Conference and out-; standing player at the NCAA Western Regional playofi's in Oregon Ore-gon his senior year. During "58" when the BYU won the conference, confer-ence, all the players were from small towns (class B players) and this is the last yar BYU has won the conference title. John set several records at the "Y", two of which have never been broken: the rebound record of 2C In a game and a free throw rcoord of 11 out of 17. It neemed that his charming girl friend Sut, who later became his wife, was good luck. Sue was born in Waco, Texas, grew up in California, then attended the "Y". She was a song leader all three years of high school,. She was converted to the LDS Church in 1954 and was the only member of her family to join. when John graduated in 1958 and Sue had completed two years at the "Y" they were married. . . . Basketball is still part of John's life and since leaving BYU he i has played semi-pro for Kirby Shoes at Los Angeles, coached at I.loah for 3 years tailing his team to the state twice, coached for , Payscm High one year, taking j his team to state. At present he referees for high schools, is a j physical education teacher at Jor-idon Jor-idon Jr. High and sells life in-. in-. surance With all this activity he still finds time to play on his I ward M-Men team. I The Bensons moved to Hunter i in June, 19G3. Sue says her life is ! "all family" now and with Jean-j Jean-j ie 5, John, Jr. 1; Craij? 18 months. I and Cathy 6 months we can see ; she's a busy mother. She man-j man-j n;?cs to find time for lu r lop Pi-I Pi-I lot Primary class and likes to 1 golf when siie gets the opportunity. |
