College Play to Feature Authentic Gown The College of Southern Utah drama department is preparing for one of. its most pretentious offerings winter quarter. "Maria Stuart" by Schiller, playwright, will be presented February 18 through 20, it was announced by Fred C. Adams, CSU drama director. The play will feature some of the most interesting costuming and special effects used to date at the college, which, as the site of the Utah Shakespearean Fes- ", a paiuCuiauji liuicu iOi the excellent quality of its Elizabethan Eliza-bethan productions. Preparations for the play depicting de-picting the life of Mary, Queen of Scots, have been underway for some time. A gown that will be the showpiece of the produc-tion produc-tion is nearlng completion. Weighing nearly 75 pounds, the dress is fashioned from 31 yards of silver Peau du Soi and 10 yards of red silk velvet. The bodice and skirt have been hand-tied into hundreds of diamond-shaped designs, which will each be centered cen-tered by a simulated Jewel. Some 14 gross of costume pearls, rubles and amethysts will be used. The t dress is an authentic copy of the ; court attire worn by Elizabeth, i Queenof England. i Mr. Adams and CSU costumer, . Mrs. Lee Thompson, have at-I at-I tained a far-reaching reputation I for dressing their play characters i and stage settings with magnificent magnifi-cent elegance. This has been ' accomplished with a minimum of : expense because of the complete ' e'edication of each play partici- pant Students become actors and actresses, some of them for the iirsi time, iney aiso learn the arts of dressmaking, scenery construction con-struction and stage lighting. Male participants become adept at costume ornamentation and coeds run the gamut of activity from sewing to Janitorial service. Try-outs for "Maria Stuart" will be completed the first week in January to select the cast of 25 men and five women. |
