Show T-Birds in Tournament Consolation Finals I The College of Southern Utah Thunderbirds tangled for the Consolation championship of the California Western Tournament at San Diego, Calif., vdnesday evening after dropping their opening round and came out on tiie long end In the second round of play. San Diego University outlasted outlast-ed the T-Birds in the opening round of play Monday with a 60 to 58 victory. In Tuesday's second round of action the T-Birds completely dominated Colorado College to win their way into the consolation consola-tion finals. In the Consolation round the T-Birds T-Birds met the Marine Corps Recruiting Re-cruiting Depot of San Diego. Doug Peterson was the leading scorer In the first round of play with 17 points. He was followed by Gil Mullins with 14, including includ-ing 10 for 10 from the foul line. Rodney Oliver hit for 13 and was the only other T-Bird in double figures. Ashford of San Diego led all scorers with 24. The San Diego crew took an early lead and held It throughout the game, although the T-Birds narrowed the margin periodically but never quite took over the lead. In a final splurge before the half the T-Blrds came to within one, at 31 to 32 at the intermission. Peterson, Oliver and Mullin provided some good rebounding strength In the losing effort. Tuesday's game saw the T-Birds T-Birds dominate the action to pick up their second victory of the season. Mel Wadsworth, who rode the bench throughout Mon day's action came up with his best effort of the season to lead the rebounding and scoring In the victory. He tanked 11 from the field and hit one from the foul line to garner 23 points. John Johnson hit for 15 from his guard spot and assistance in scoring also came from Peterson with 11 and Oliver with 10. Final score read 73 to 60 with coach Boyd Adams sweeping the bench in the one-sided contest. |
