Show T-Birds Prepare for Dixie Invitational I After a four game losing streak in southern California this past week, the College of Southern Utah basketball squad is working hard this week to show some improvements in the Dixie College Invitational Basketball Bas-ketball tournament to be staged Wednesday, Thursday and Fri day in St. George. In this eight-team, three night J tournament, the Tunderbirds will get their first major look at J three Intermountain Collegiate Athletic teams including Snow, J Dixie and Ricks College. In the opening round of play J Wednesday evening the Thun- i derbirds met Palo Verde Junior J College at 7:30 p. m. Coach Cleo Potty's Thunder- J birds are in the upper bracket and in addition to Palo Verde J it includes Ricks and Eastern Ar- izona Junior College. J Lower division entrants in- elude Riverside, Mt. Sac plus, J Snow and host, Dixie College, i The tournament includes both' a championship and consolation ! J bracket with finals scheduled for Friday evening at the Dixie Col-jJ lege fieldhou.se. One of Coach Petty's big hopes v in the tournament is LaMar J Pugh who has been the top scorer in previous games of the I J Thunderbirds. Pugh had a big.i year at Cyprus High in 10G0 and' J is expected to handle the post position for the Thunderbirds. He J is rugged under the boards, par- ticularly defensive rebounding, , J and is fairly accurate with a jump shot anywhere aro'ind the J key. 1 1 In California, although the T-,' Birds hit a lour-game losing streak, Larry Dehlin came J through with some fine outside shooting that they hope will aid in the tournament play. Following action in the Dixie tournament the Thunderbirds will take a holiday break returning return-ing to the courts January 5 to open Conference play. |
