Show Enterprise Canal Project Aids Water Users Over 25.000 feet of cement canal ca-nal and nearly 10(H) feet of rp- mciit pipe which has been laid near Enterprise this summer and fall is expected to eliminate a water loss that has been recorded record-ed as high as 50 percent to farmers farm-ers and users in that area. Enterprise Reservoir and Canal Ca-nal Company, with Ivan Bailow as president, has completed the special concervation program this year with three contractors participating to bring the construction con-struction phase to completion within a relatively short space of time. The new water conveying system sys-tem is capable of carrying 32 second se-cond feet of water, although it Is anticipated that the general flow will be somewhere near 16 second feet. The canal begins west of Enterprise En-terprise and extends east to Enterprise En-terprise and continues approximately approxi-mately one-half mile northeast of that city where the water will be used by residents of both Washington County and Iron County. Diversions from the canal ca-nal begin at Enterprise and throughout the northeast section to the end of the present system. Officers of he Canal Company indicate that an additional four miles of canal will be installed as soon as possible. Checks over the canal system in the past several years have indicated in-dicated a tremendous water loss from 25 percent to as high as 50 percent, depending on the water year. The new canal system sys-tem is expected to eliminate a major nnrtion of that loss and in addition will shorten the amount of time nec?sary to convey con-vey the water to the diversion points for irrigational use. Financing of the project is a joint effort with the Enterprise Reservoir and Canal Co. as the suiiujis ulgollliBUUlU C051 share loan agreement with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Program (ASCP) was set up and a non-interest loan was also obtained from the Utah Power Board. Actual cost of construction was from $3.50 to $3.75 per foot. ft the beginning of the project pro-ject West of Enterprise, approximately approx-imately 700 feet of 27" concrete pipe was laid through a flood basin area. From that point approximately ap-proximately 23,217 feet of cement ce-ment lining was installed. The Canal is 18 inches wide at the bottom and 34" in depth. For approximately 1,100 feet the depth was increased to 38 inches. in-ches. Two of the three major contractors con-tractors on the project were from Cedar City. They are the Lambeth Lam-beth Bros, and Parry Sand and Gravel. Parry Sand and Gravel installed approximately 8,973 feet of the canal and the Lambeth Lam-beth Bros, completed installation of approximately 5,822 feet of canal plus the 700 feet of concrete con-crete pip. The third major contractor was Leon Jennings of St. George who Installed approximately 11,-500 11,-500 feet of the canal. For the project, technical assistance as-sistance was given by the Soil Conservation Service through the Enterprise Soil Conservation District. |
