Show Cedar Wins County Tourney Cedar High School Redmen came out on the long end In the Iron County Basketball tournament tourna-ment when they picked up a pair of victories over the visiting dubs. Gunnison and South Uovior split, both losing t the Red-men Red-men and both defeating the Pa-rowan Pa-rowan Rams. In the opening round of play at the CSU fieldhouse in Cedar City, the Rams and South Sevier Se-vier played down to the wire with the visitors from Monroe coming out on the long end 36 to 35. after trailing through the first three quarters of play. Cedar City, led by Neil Roberts, defeated Gunnison 51 to 41 In a game that was much closer than the 10 point spread at the final gun would indicate. Although Al-though the Redmen led through most of the game they went behind be-hind midway in the fourth period and then came back to win. At Parowan Saturday evening the Redmen took a lead over, South Sevier and then set back In the final canto with a deliberate deli-berate stall against a tight, sag- fclllK .win-, iiiaiiiiaiiiiiig uioi ii-ou and coming out with a final 39 to 33 victory. A hot shooting Gunnison crew couldn't be slopped by the smaller Parowan Rams in the final game of the tournament and Gunnison came through with the widest margin of victory defeating the Rams 52 to 26. In the opening game both South Sevier and Parowan went into holies early in the game and the Rams were handling the ball better to move out Into an early lead. Led by Blaine Hyatt who tanked 18 points in the contest the Rams broke away from an 8 to 7 advantage at the end of the first period to lead at half-time half-time IS to 12. Hyatt, teamed with Robin Graff, was also doing the lions share of bankboard j work against the taller South Sevier team. South Sevier made their move in the third period of play with Dan Thurston taking over the rebounding duties and Wade hitting hit-ting well from outside. Parowan was unable to get the ball in for the close one and the visitors visi-tors moved to within one point at thi three quarter mark, 25 to 26. As the fourth period opened Bob Cartwright hit on a rebound to make the spread three points but a field goal and two fouls put South Sevier out In the lead 29 to 28. Three baskets by Neil Roberts in the final minute of the first quarter of play against Gunnison Gunni-son put the Redmen out in front 15 to 7 breaking away from a 7 to 7 tie. Cedar moved the ball well against the Gunnison zone with team efforts concentrating on Roberts on the short post under the bucket. Gunnison readjusted their defense de-fense in the second period maintaining main-taining a four man zone and putting Gary Hill on N. Roberts, man to man. In that period Gunnison Gun-nison closed the gap somewhat but Dave Higbee came into the lineup and hit on a drive and Kent Farnsworth tanked a 20-footer 20-footer to keep the Redmen out in front. With 24 seconds left in the period Gunnison took over their'first lead of the game, 31 to 30 on a field goal by Bartholomew. Barthol-omew. Again Roberts came back with a basket underneath to give the Redmen a slim lead, 32 to 31, at the end of the third period. In the fourth period of play the Redmen were fouling and on four straight from the foul line the score was knotted at 3-1-all ; and on two quick baskets by Hill, j the second from long range, I took over their biggest lead of ' the game, 3S to 35. Kent Smith j hit from the side for the Red-men, Red-men, Roberts hit on a drive, and John Stephenson hit on a jumper jump-er from out front to move Cedar out in front by 3, 41 to 38, but Gunnison bounced back to tie it at 41-all with two and one-hal: minutes remaining. Roberts and Higbee hit from the field to move the Redmen out In front by four and then the team moved into n stall and picked up the final points on four shots from the foul line by Farnsworth and a tremendous final second set shot by Kent Smith at the buzzer for the final score, 51 to 41. Saturday evening the Redmen jumped off to a 14 to 10 first quarter lead but the pace slowed down considerably In the second period with the Redmen garnering garner-ing only nine and South Sevier only four for a halftime score of 23 to 1 1. Only four Cedar City men go! into the scoring column and Neil Roberts was top man of the evening even-ing and of the two-night tournament, tourna-ment, with 25 points. In the final fin-al half of play the Redmen collected col-lected 16 points, 14 of those by Roberts. A fieldgonl by Donnie Roberts was the only other Red-men Red-men score in the half, that coming com-ing in the third period. The Redmen maintained the lead throughout the game with a 31 to 21 third quarter score. In the fourth period South Sevier put on a full court press, then moved back Into a tight zone. Roberts picked up right points in the period, principally on passes over the full court press. With the Redmen leading, however, they moved the ball outside trying to draw South Sevier out of the zone. The visitors vis-itors wouldn't budge and It became be-came a matter of control with the Redmen handling the ball way outside the zone through most of the fourth period of play. Wade of Soulh Sevier was the visitors' lop scorer with 14 on seven f ieldgoals evenly distributed distribut-ed throughout the game.
