Show PROCLAMATION WHEREAS the annual sale of the American Legion Poppy is at hand, and since this poppy sale was first originated by the American Legion An June, 1919, the purpose being to honor the dead and help the living, by raising funds for welfare care of the dependents of deceased and disabled veterans, and WHEREAS the making of the poppies by those who did not die, but came back, doomed to years of hardship and suffering, sometimes some-times worse than death, and WHEREAS that in the poppy was found a way to link the honoring hon-oring of the dead with the service ser-vice of the living, and WHEREAS, on Sept. 27-29, 1920 the American Legion in national convention assembled in Cleveland, Cleve-land, Ohio, passed a resolution that the Poppy be adopted as the official flower of the American Legion, and WHEREAS the first national convention of the American Le-gion Le-gion Auxiliary in 1921 the following fol-lowing resolution was adopted: "Resolved: that the poppy be made the memorial flower of the American Legion Auxiliary, and jthe wearing of it by all citizens on Memorial Day be encouraged, land resolved further, that its 'sale be promoted for the sole purpose of aiding in Veterans Relief Work", and WHEREAS, other veterans organizations or-ganizations have followed the American Legion and Legion Auxiliary in adopting the poppy as their official flower of remembrance, remem-brance, NOW, THEREFORE, I, L. V. Broadbent, Mayor of Cedar City do here recognize the patriotic and merciful merits of this cause by urging the citizens of this community to contribute generously gener-ously to Its support through purchase pur-chase of the Original American Legion Poppy on May 23, 1953.
