Show Four Redmen Place In Annual State Track and Field Meet The Cedar City high school track and field team scored 13 points in the state meet last week end to finish in a four-way tie for seventh place among class B schools. Delta high school turned in a surprise performance to walk off with the state championship cham-pionship for 1953. Final team scores were as follows: fol-lows: Delta 36, Springville 34, Cyprus 29, Millard 21, Wasatch Academy 19, Lincoln 15, Cedar City 13, Grantsville 13, Lehi 13, Beaver 13, Union 11. Uintah. 11, Kanab 10Vi, Gunnison 10, Richfield 10, Murray 9, North Se-vier Se-vier 9, Dixie 8, Park City 5, Tooele Too-ele 3, North Emery 3, Panguitch 2Vs, Payson 2, Hurricane 1, South Summit 1, American Fork Vs, Tropic Va. The Cedar City athletes failed to score a first place in the meet, but turned in excellent performances perform-ances In winning points for the Redmen school. Delmont Wallace finished second sec-ond in the broad jump, with Pearce of Beaver taking first with a jump of 21 feet 9 inches. Ray Stephenson tied for second sec-ond in the high jump with Bishop Bish-op of Delta. Burgoyne of Kanab took first in the event with a Jump of 5 feet 11 Va inches. Wendell Holmes, Cedar weight man, placed in two events, taking tak-ing fourth In the discus and fifth in the shot put, and Herb Corry added the remaining point with a fifth in the 410 yard dash. The state record in the shot put was broken by Strong of Cyprus with a heave of 52 feet 11 inches. inch-es. Besides Strong, Day of Millard, Mil-lard, Neel of Lincoln and Brady of Cyprus, finished ahead of Holmes in the shot put. In the discus, Carey of Wasatch Academy; Aca-demy; Bennion of Cyprus, and Jones of Delta, passed the best Holmes could do. The winning throw was 149 feet 8V4 inches. Corry finished behind Cook-sey Cook-sey of Wasatch Academy, Benson Ben-son of Union, Payne of Millard and Pyne of Lincoln. The time for the race was 52.4. |
