Show Board Approves Teacher Salary Increase The Iron County Board of Education Edu-cation took the lead this week in meeting the need for salary increases in-creases to maintain a strong teaching staff, and adopted a salary schedule that provides increases in-creases over the present schedule of from $175 a year for beginning teachers to $387 n year for those who have reached the maximum base through education and experience. ex-perience. The new schedule is designed to encourage teachers not only to enter the profession but to continue teaching for a number of years because of larger increases in-creases allowed as experience is gained. The new schedule increases in-creases the starting pay for new teachers Just entering the profession profes-sion from $2,825 a year to $3000, or an increase of $175 a year. This is gradually increased as the teacher gains experience until un-til a maximum of $4500 is reached. reach-ed. The present maximum Is $-1,113, therefore a teacher who is receiving the maximum pay at the present time will receive a salary increase of $387 for his 1953-54 year's work. As a means of encouraging the young teachers to remain for at least a period of three years, la substantial increase is allowed' after the third year of teaching. I Starting at $3000 a year the j teacher would receive a $50 a j year Increase in each of his sec-j sec-j ond and third year of service. As ,he begins his fourth year he is given a $200 a year Increase placing the salary at $3300. An increase of $100 a year is then allowed until the maximum of $-1500 is reached. The new schedule was submitted sub-mitted to the board as a recommendation recom-mendation of the Iron County Teachers Association, and was presented by Willis W. Wynn, president; Marvin Graff, vice president, and Mrs. Donna Beck Cooley, secretary. The only rec-orr.endatian rec-orr.endatian made by the association asso-ciation that was not accepted by the board was that an automatic increase of $150 be allowed when a teacher receives an additional degree. This increase, instead was set at $100, according to board members. I Following the adoption of the new schedule the board directed direct-ed that contracts with the teachers teach-ers incorporating the new schedule sched-ule be negotiated as quickly as possible. Authorization was also given the superintendent and clerk to revise the tentative budget of expenditures to provide for the salary increases, and submit the new budget for final approval at the June meeting of the board. A public hearing on the I proposed budget will be held be-for be-for the final adoption by the ! board. I The board had previously adopted a tentative budget that placed total operating expendl- J tures for the coming school year at $506,547.90. The new salary schedule, however, will necessitate necessi-tate revising this slightly upward. up-ward. The tentative budget, In which some salary increase was anticipated was roughly $3-1.000 higher than the current year's budget, of $532,980.90. As soon as the budget is revised a public hearing will be called. The salary increase was voted only for teachers. However, members mem-bers advise that as soon as proper pro-per consideration can be given the matter, an increase for all other school personnel will be approved. This will include such employees as Janitors, mechanics and office help. |
