Show BRONCOS WIN HOOP OPENER 79-67 A nip and tuck ball game saw the visiting Chaffey Pirates, lead, held most of the way, turn in favor of Coach Cleo Fetty and the College of So. Utah Broncos Bron-cos in the last five minutes of play and the Broncos headed for the showers with a firm 79 to 67 victory in their season opener, Saturday night in the Memorial Fieldhouse. Chaffey had defeated Dixie College Friday evening in their swing into Utah on their first tour of the season. Saturday night Chaffey Jed most of the game. After Bob Davis Da-vis of the Broncos dunked the first shot of the night Chaffey's Larry Allen retaliated, hitting his first shot and Kay Dorman hit one from the field and Robin Dean hit two fouls to send Chaf- fey into a 6 to 2 lead. Not until five minutes into the game did the Broncos get back into the lead at 12 to 11, but that didn't last long. Chaffey jumped back to 15 to 12 lead and then into in-to a 21 to 14 lead. Coming from behind, which the Broncos were doing all through the first half, Coach Petty's boys tied It up at 29 al! and again at! 31 all. Chaffey bounced back to a 38 to 38 tie hitting three of four fouls, all on personals committed com-mitted by Davis. Chaffey again took the lead with two more fours and two field goals to lead 46 to 42 at half time. Throughout the first hajf the Broncos, slow on the backboards and unable to penetrate the Chaffey Chaf-fey defense, relied on the fast break and it worked effectively on a number of occasions. Davis did some nice work in moving the ball down fast and Donald Floyd was tanking the ball on the play. Robert Hill, a freshman, played well, working the post and doing some nice baM handling, hand-ling, as did David Orton, another of Coach Petty's starters. Chaffey Takes Initiative As the second half opened the Pirates moved into another lead, 49 to 42 before the Broncos could get under way. Davis again hit first from the field for the Broncos Bron-cos but Chaffey tanked two right after to take a nine point lead, 53 to 41. Davis hit another, followed fol-lowed by a layup by Floyd and another from outside by Davis before Chaffey converted two points from the free-throw lane. Vernon Roundy hit a field goal and two foul tries about five minutes in to take the Broncos into a slim 54 to 53 lead. Orton fojlowed with a nice drive on a two-one-one situation on the fast break, to widen the gap, but Allen and Crowley of Chaffey hit two successive field goals to move the Pirates again into the lead at 58 to 57. It was all tied up at C2 all with less than four minutes to play. That's when the fuse on the powder keg ran out and the Broncos jumped immediately into in-to a lead which they held and expanded in those waning minutes, min-utes, j Orton and Floyd both hit field goa.'s and Chaffey for the first time in the game failed to hit from thp free-lane. Hill added another field goal in those last minutes and Orton tipped in four more points with two foul pitches and a field goal. Dale Langston drove In for another field goal for the Broncos and Burke Johnson hit two foul pitches followed by a field goal on a jump shop by Hill to end the Bronco scoring with a final 79 to 67 victory. |
