Show City Adopts Television Agreement Opens W ay for Cable Systems Here Although the question of television for Cedar City, free or otherwise, has not been settled, the City Council has taken action that places the decision squarely on the competing companies who are considering plans of bringing bring-ing television service to the people of the city. Three companies are still in the picture, Trans-Community Television Network, Inc., the Escalante Service Corporation, and the Southern Utah Broadcasting Company. Southern Utah Broadcasting Company officials have made definite public commitments' that "free" television will be brought to Cedar City providing sufficient stock in the company is subscrib-ed subscrib-ed to make the undertaking possible. pos-sible. This type of project does not necessitate city approval, and therefore the city council action has no bearing on this program. It does depend, it is understood, on Federal Communications Commission Com-mission approval. The other two proposals involve easement agreements with the city, and therefore the council has approved agreements that will be acceptable to the city, I submitted copies to the two com- panics concerned and notified I them that they wilt be welcomed at the next regular meeting of the council, Thursday, Dec. 15, at which time agreements can be signed with either or both of the firms if regulations of the agreements are complied with. The two agreements are identical iden-tical except for the few regulations regula-tions because of the difference in the two services. The Trans-Community Trans-Community agreement stipulates that the connection fee will be $150 and the monthly rental fee $7.50. In the event a resident moves from a home in which he has paid for installation fees, he can have his new residence serviced ser-viced for a charge of $25.00. Or if a person moves into a home that has already been wired, the connection con-nection can be made for a $25.00 charge, rather than the $150. ESC Charges The Escalante Service Com-j pany agreement provides that the 1 connection fee shall be $150, and the monthly rental fee, $3.00. The amount of the other charges, in the event of moving from one home to another, has not yet been agreed upon. Each agreement is for a 10-year 10-year period, with the option of extending it for another 10 years'. Neither agreement is exclusive, and either or both can be accepted accept-ed by the city If the companies meet with the requirements. The Trans-Community company is requested re-quested to start construction work in 15 days. A time limit on the other firm has not been decided upon. Trans-Community officials have Indicated that all documents will be ready today or tomorrow, and that they will be ready to sign the agreement at that time, and a.lso ready to start work. However How-ever It Is not known whether or not the council would accept an agreement signed before the Dec. 15 meeting. The other company has not Indicated its' definite pjans. Further Stipulations The agreements provide that the companies must assume re-sponslbllltly re-sponslbllltly for property or personal per-sonal damage, and that definite Insurance protection must be provided pro-vided before the agreements are signed. Complete and satisfactory financial statements are required, I protection against radio Interference Interfer-ence Is provided, and the companies com-panies are prevented from assigning assign-ing their agreements to other firms without first receiving city permission to do so. The council also provides that If either of the agreements are signed, a television advisory board will be established to con-slW con-slW nmbiemi that may arise , from time to time. |
