Show Cedar City Redmen Lose Practice Encounters, But Show Promise The Cedar City high school basketball team, composed mostly most-ly of juniors who have had very little experience, dropped the first two practice games of the season last week end, but even in defeat showed considerable promise of things to come. Hav- ing lost the first seven men cf his 1952-53 squad by graduation, Coach Ray Englestead is forced jto build an almost completely new team this year, and is attempting at-tempting to mold the squad with players who have seen very lit-le lit-le action in high school competition. compe-tition. The Redmen traveled to Richfield Rich-field for the first game of the season, dropping the encounter by a 39 to 33 score, losing their chance for victory by falling be- j hind in the third period. The Redmen trailed by one point at ' the first quarter end, and were tied with the highly rated Rich-1 field team at 19 all at half time. The third period was rather disastrous, di-sastrous, with the Redmen scoring scor-ing only five points while their opponents got 16, to fall behind 35 to 2-1. They came back strong in the final period to score nine points while holding Richfield Rich-field to four, to close the gap to six points as the final gun sounded. sound-ed. Saturday night the Redmen returned re-turned home to entertain the traveling tra-veling Gunnison high school team in a practice session in the C S U fieldhouse. Again the Redmen were defeated, by an-identical an-identical score, 39 to 33. This time Coach Englestead's squad rallied in the third period to tie the score at 25-all but fell behind be-hind in the final canto to lose by a six point margin. Each team scored eight points in the first quarter, but the visitors Jumped I ahead in the second period, leaving leav-ing the. floor at half time with an 18 to 13 advantage. Friday night the Cedar team will travel to Panguitch for a game with the Panguitch high (Continued to Page 14) REDMEII (Continued from Page 13) school team, and on Saturday night will tangle with the Paro-wan Paro-wan Rams in the beautiful new gymnasium at the Parowan high school. The Parowan game will be a severe test for the Cedar squad, since the Rams took the measure of Gunnison, 41 to 31, the night before the Gunnison team took the measure of the Redmen. The week following the team will participate in an Iron County Coun-ty invitational meet, with the Cedar and Parowan teams meeting meet-ing Cyprus and Springville high schools on Friday and Saturday nights. The games will be played at Parowan Friday night with Cedar meeting Cyprus and Parowan Paro-wan tangling with Springville. Saturday night the teams will move to Cedar City with Parowan Paro-wan and Cyprus playing the opening game and Cedar meeting Springville in the night-cap. The Springville team is coached by Alma Garrett, former coach at Cedar City high school. Walter K. Daly, former Cedar high teacher teach-er and Parowan high principal, Is now principal of Cyprus high school. The Cedar team is composed of Richard Hey wood, Jerry Frame, Herb Corry, Steven Lunt, Rodney Prisbrey, Ronald Mclntire, Jay Perkins. Roger Haycock, Gall Fife, Terry Bolander, Gaylord Graff and Jerry Nelson. |
