Show Funeral Services Held for Five Hurricane Men Killed in Crash Joint funeral services were conducted in Hurricane Tuesday afternoon for five young men of that community who lost their lives Friday, Dec. 4, in perhaps the worst highway accident in the history of this part of the state. The services were conducted by Raymond DeMllle, bishop' of the Hurricane North Ward, for Orien Ballard, 28; his brother, Barry Paul Ballard, 18; Robert Lynn Gibson, 22; Lenzi Mack Spend-love, Spend-love, 21, and Robert Dale Hinton, 21. The five young men were killed kill-ed when the automobile in which they were riding spun out of control on the icy highway between be-tween Dry Creek and Ash Creek In Washington County and crashed crash-ed into the side of a heavy truck and trailer of the Arrowhead Freight Lines. The truck was driven dri-ven by David Siroonian, 31, Whit-tier, Whit-tier, Calif, who was uninjured. Asleep in the truck was relief driver Art Hill, Monterey Park, Calif., who suffered nek and back injuries, but was released from the hospital after treatment. The car carrying the young men skidded out of control as it approached the oncoming truck, and crashed into the side of it at the driving or rear wheels ol the tractor and then bounced in between the. tractor and trailer. The force of the impact threw the truck into a spin, the trailer turning over as the truck Jack-knifed. Jack-knifed. Four of the victims died almost immediately, but the fifth, Paul Ballard, died about four hours later in the Iron County Coun-ty hospital. The accident occurred occur-red at about 11:15 a. m. Friday. None of the victims were thrown from the car it is understood. Orien and Paul Ballard are sons of Lafayette N. and Mildred Pollock Ballard, Hurricane. Orien, 28, was born Nov. 1, 1922. He graduated from the Hurricane high school in 1941 and later attended the Branch Agricultural College in Cedar City. He was a veteran of service with the U. S. Air Force. He married Myrla Ha-fen Ha-fen ol Santa Clara on April 15, 1944, and since 1948. they had resided in Henderson, Nev. They have four children. Barry Ballard was born Oct. 21, 1935, and was a graduate of the Hurricane high school. He had recently volunteered for service with the U. S. Navy and was awaiting his call to dutv when the accident happened. The two Ballard men are survived by their parents, and the following brothers and sisters: Allan Ballard, Bal-lard, Huntington, Utah; Andris Ballard, New York; Edwin S., in the armed services; Mrs. Shirlev Stokes, Boulder City; Sandra Ballard, Bal-lard, Hurricane, and LaMar Ballard, Bal-lard, Hurricane. Orien is also sur-vwpd sur-vwpd by his widow and four children. Robert Lynn Gibson, 22, was born June 10, 1931, a son of Elmer R. and Edna Stout Gibson. On Nov. 19, 1951, he entered the First Marine Division, and had boon home from service in Korea only two weeks when the accident acci-dent occurred. Hur-ricane. Lenzi Mack Spendlove, 21, was born Oct. 30, 1932, a son of Ian-thus Ian-thus and Blanche Sullivan Spendlove. He has been employed in construction work since leaving leav-ing the Hurricane high school. Surviving are his parents, three brothers and two sisters: Weston Spendlove, Salt Lake City; Jerry, Dennis and Carolvn Spendlove, Hurricane; Mrs. Grace Iverson, Washington, and a grandfather, Charles Sullivan, St. George. Dale Hinton, 21, was born Feb. 28, 1932, a son of James Maurice and Cletsa Cox Hinton. He graduated grad-uated fiom the Hurricane high school iii 1947, and was serving with the U. S. Air Force. He was home on a 30-day leave and was to have returned for re-assignment in Alaska, Saturday. He is survived by his narents, four brothers bro-thers and one sister: LaVar, An-tone, An-tone, Glendon Hinton, Hurricane; Orvan, Selma, Ala., and Mrs. Vaughn Dunagan, Animas, N. M. ' Mr. and Mrs. Tucker, although home for only a few days, ex-i pressed their sincere appreciation apprecia-tion to the people of Cedar City for their support while they labored la-bored In the mission field. Thrilled at seeing and meeting friends of Cedar City again, Mr. and Mrs. Tucker expressed their joy at being home for a short time. Upon their return to the mis- sion field, sometime this week. Mr. and Mrs. Tucker will remain for approximately another year. |
