Show Hunters Commended For Fire Care In Forest Regions A summary report of fires that occurred during the 1953 fire season sea-son on the Dixie National Forest revealed that there were 36 forest fires that started and burned. Of these eight wre man-caused and 28 were started by lightning. All were attacked and extinguished exting-uished by Forest Service crews or forest fire cooperators, stated Boyd Leonard, fire control officer foi the Dixie Forest. Though two large and damaging fires occurred occur-red just outside the forest boundaries boun-daries that grew to 850 and 1500 acres In size and which Forest Service, BLM and National Park crews controlled, the largest one inside the forest amounted to only 23 acres occurring near Red Canyon. Hunters this season are to be highly commended for the care they exercised with fire, said Mr. Leonard. Not a single fire occurred oc-curred from deer hunters on the Dixie National Forest in spite of the dry fall before the arrival of storms. This is exceptionally good cooperation co-operation and greatly appreciated appreciat-ed by the Forest Service personnel person-nel and all those who help to fight fires. Appreciation is extended to the newspapers, radio station KSUB, theatres, business houses, and all who so willingly helped to publicize the danger of fire and thereby assisted in the protection protec-tion of the watersheds of this area. |
