Show Taycees Launch "Voice Of Democracy" Through the cooperation of the Cedar City high school its speech department and the Cedar City Junior Chamber of Commerce a Voice of Democracy contest is under way at the school that will terminate on Dec. 2, it was announced an-nounced today by McRay Howard, How-ard, chairman of the contest. Following through on a nation-wide contest the local Jay-cees Jay-cees are sponsoring the Voice of Democracy contest at the local high school with the winner to be placed in state competition on Dec. 7 and the state finalist will be entered In the national contest con-test to take place on Jan. 1, 1954. According to Mr. Cloward, three local winneri will be awarded valuable prizes for their efforts and a recording of the first place winner will be sent to the Utah Jaycees for competition. compe-tition. At the local high school principal prin-cipal P. M. Bothers has assured the cooperation of the school in the undertaking and the project has been placed in the hands of Jordan L. Larsen, head of the speech department. The voice of democracy contest con-test is open to all students within with-in the 10th 11th and 12th grades and will be in the form of a speech of undetermined length on any topic dealing with democracy. de-mocracy. The Cedar City Jaycees will furnish judges and during the week of Dec. 2 to Dec. 7 the first three places in the local affair will be chosen and a transcript made for entry into the state contest. At the state contest the prizes will also be given with the state winner to be awarded a radio-phonograph radio-phonograph combination or a television set plus several other prizes for those competing. I At the national level, entries will be judged on Jan. 1. From the national entries, four coequal co-equal winners will be picked. In addition to a $.")00 scholarship award, the national winners will spend a week in Washington D. C, and in Colonian Williamsburg, Williams-burg, Va., whore they will participate par-ticipate in the Democracy Workshop, Work-shop, a national youth forum. While in Washington they will observe governmental agencies in action, visit historic shrines and meet important figures in political life. Climax of the week will be the annual awards luncheon lunch-eon Feb. 24. Interested contestants for the Voice of Democracy contest are urged to contact Mr. Larson of the high school or one of the Jaycee committeemen. Coordinating the activities and making the necessary arrangements arrange-ments for prizes and the transcription tran-scription of the local winner is the Jaycee committee with Mr. Cloward In charge.
