Show Cedar City Coordinating Council To Ask Finance, Retirement Airing Citizens of Cedar City will petition pe-tition Governor J. Bracken Lee this week to make sure that school financing and the teacher teach-er retirement problem be brought before the special session of the state legislature which will convene con-vene Dec. 1. The petition to the governor will be submitted in the form of a resolution from the Cedar City Coordinating Council as the result of a meeting held Wednesday Wed-nesday evening at the request of the Parent Teachers Association. The meeting was attended by a very representative group of citizens cit-izens and a discussion of general school problems took place. The meeting was conducted by Albert Albertson, chairman of the Coordinating Council, and Mrs. Dee G. Cowan, P-TA Council president. An explanation of school financing fi-nancing problems was given by lanthus Wright, superintendent of Iron County schools, pointing out that the constant increase of school population, coupled with the decrease of the value of the dollar is the major cause of the financial dilema. He gave statistics on school enrollment and costs to substantiate his stand. , Twain Tippetts, Utah Education Educa-tion Association director, also spoke on the trend of school enrollment en-rollment and financing. Marvin Graff, president of the Iron County Coun-ty Teachers Association, and Mrs. Jess Guymon, regional P-TA director, di-rector, spoke briefly during the meeting. Following these discussions State Representative Heber Sevy listed the 13 items to be brought before the special session of the legislature as set forth in the Governor's call for the session. While the representatives present pres-ent were in accord with the need for consideration of these items, they were of the opinion that the two most important questions, school financing and teacher retirement, re-tirement, were not included. As a result it was decided to submit the resolution to the governor urging him to make sure that these matters come before the session before adjournment, as he has promised. A committee composed of Dr. R. W. Farns-worth, Farns-worth, Supt. lanthus Wright, Charles R. Hunter, Mrs. William Burton and Mrs. Jess Guymon, was appointed to formulate the resolution and keep in touch with the progress of the legislative legisla-tive session so that any additional addi-tional action needed might, be taken promptly. The Coordinating Council officials offi-cials also urged all civic groups of Cedar City to study the school situation and to take an active part in finding a solution for the problems that have arisen. United States Congressman Douglas R. Stringfellow, who was in attendance at the meeting, spoke briefly and praised Cedai City for its organization of a Coordinating Council, and its attack at-tack on important problems on a community-wide basis. |
