Show Iron County Board Of Education Prepares For School Opening The Board of Education of the Iron County School District Dis-trict in regular meeting Monday, spent the major portion of its time in making preparations for the opening of school on Tuesday, Sept. 7. However, the members spent sometime looking further into the future by studying a school survey report given by Allen West, executive secretary sec-retary of the Utah Education Association. The survey was conducted during the College of Southern Utah summer sessions by a class in school in community relations led by Mr. West. It gave a most interest-ing interest-ing cross-section of the thinking of the people of the district about various school problems, and the board members, after hearing Mr. West's report Monday, considered con-sidered briefly suggestions made by the people interviewed during the survey. They agreed that detailed de-tailed study should be made of the report as a means of deter-mining deter-mining what improvements or changes could be made in the school program as a result of the opinion survey. The school board approved the school calendar outlined by Superintendent Ianthus Wright, with school opening on Sept. 7 and closing on May 25. School , holidays will include Oct. 7 and I 8 for the Utah Education Asso-I Asso-I elation convention, Nov. 25 and 26 for Thanksgiving, from noon Dec. 23 to Jan. 3 for Christmas vacation, and Mar. 17 and 18 for spring vacation. New Teachers Approved Four new teachers were an- proved for positions in the county, coun-ty, leaving three vacancies yet to be filled. Two of the vacancies vacan-cies are in the Parowan High School and the third in the Cedar Ce-dar Elementary School. Commer-cial Commer-cial and music teachers are needed need-ed for the Parowan High School. The music department vacancy was created when Wilford Young resigned to accept a position in the Millard High School at Fillmore. Fill-more. The vacancy in the Cedar Elementary School is in the first grade, resulting from the resignation resig-nation of Mrs. David Melville. The four new teachers approved ap-proved were Frank Jensen of Salt Lake City, Franklin Meadows Mea-dows of Pocatello, Idaho, Mary Joy Justensen of Spring City, and Margene Duncan of Logan. Jensen will teach science classes in the Cedar City Junior High School, filling the vacancy caused when Lamont Bennet re-signed re-signed to become principal of the Millard High Shool. Mr. Jensen, a married man with one child, has had two years of experience in the Granite School District, and is completing work for hi3 master's degree at the University of Utah. Replaces Don Ford Mr. Meadows, who will fill the vacancy caused by the death of Don Ford this summer, will handle han-dle student guidance work In the junior high school and also teach some classes. He is a graduate of the Idaho State College, and is working toward his master's degree de-gree at Brigham Young University. Univer-sity. He is married but has no children. Miss Justeson, who graduated from Brigham Young University last spring, has accepted a position posi-tion in the third grade of the 'Parowan Elementary School. I Mrs. Duncan, a sister-in-law of Gail Duncan of Cedar City, will i teach girls physical education at the Parowan High School. A Utah State Agricultural College graduate, gradu-ate, she has had two years experience ex-perience in the Millard High School at Fillmore. Although he does not consider it a matter of vacancies, Supt. Wright states that he has been unable to find teachers for kindergarten kin-dergarten classes in the county. The board had previously approved ap-proved establishing kindergarten classes in Cedar City and Parowan Paro-wan this year, since room and finances fi-nances are available. However, the plan was abandoned because of a lack of teachers. Administrators' Workshop Supt. Wright reported at the meeting that an administrators' workshop would be held at Grand Canyon National Park on Aug. 22, 23, 21 and 23, when the superintendent sup-erintendent will join with the principals of all school in the county in three days of intensive j study of problems of administration, adminis-tration, and hear discussions by three experts m the field of education. edu-cation. Principal emphasis of the workshop will be upon the type of work to be done in cooperation coopera-tion with Kellog Foundation study stu-dy being conducted in Iron County, Coun-ty, and on a study of the opinion opin-ion survey conducted in the I county during the summer. The three speakers at the workshop will be Dr. Gerald Brown of the school of education educa-tion at Stanford University; Dr. Don Orton, dean of the school of education, Univversity of Utah, and Dr. Marie Hughes, school of education, University of Utah. The bid of the Southern Utah Dairy in Parowan for furnishing milk for the school lunch program pro-gram in the county, was accepted. accept-ed. The bid was for furnishing the milk in glass bottles at 3.3 cents per half pint. The same firm had submitted a bid of 4.3 cents for milk in cartons, and the Arden Sunfreze company in Cedar Ce-dar City had submitted a bid of 4.25 for milk in cartons. Accepting Ac-cepting the glass bottle bid will save the county about $1,300, school officials report. Curb and Gutter Approved The board authorized laying of curb and gutter on GOO West St. adjacent to the new North Elementary Ele-mentary School building in Cedar Ce-dar City. Bids had been asked for laying only of sidewalk at the school. However, it was decided de-cided to ask for rebids, including the curb and gutter as well. The board approved the sale of the Munford home on the North Elementary School grounds. Edwin Ed-win R. Higbee, who purchased the home for $135 will be required to move the building from the grounds. I Bids for furnishing coal for the school buildings in the county were considered but not accepted. accept-ed. It was decided to issue a new call for bids on a BTU basis. |
