Show Nation Steel Strike Idles 165 Workers At Local Columbia Iron Mines; l No Pickets Will Be Posted at Plant Here Operations at the Columbia Iron Mines have been almost at a complete standstill this week with 165 workers out as a part of the nation-wide steel strike. According to Carroll Brown, Cedar City, president of the C. I. O. United Steel Workers local, the local management and labor leaders are in complete agreement, agree-ment, following a Joint meeting meet-ing Monday evening. The two parties have gotten together and there will be no picket lines at the mines. However, 34 salaried employees are still on the Job. This is the result of a national policy adopted adop-ted last spring which allows these workers to continue work- Ing during a strike. The workers went off the Job Saturday, October 1, at 12:01 a.m. Utah Construction Co. has not been affected by the steel strike since Its employees are members mem-bers of the American Federation Federa-tion of Labor. Shipments by the company have been curtailed, but mining operations are still continuing. Biggest shutdown in shipments was the consignment to Colorado Fuel and Iron at Pueblo, Col. Equipment which was being Installed in the new Columbia Power Plant by Utah Construction Construc-tion was also stopped because of the strike. |
